Credit: Università di Catania A ritual table from 3500 years ago, with all its ceramic dishware still in place, along with accommodations for the braziers used to cook food, has been discovered by archaeologists at a site in Azerbaijan. The site was likely a resting point used by nomadic populations moving between the Kura River basin and the Caucasus Mountains between 1500 https://www.labrujulaverde.com/en/2024/07/a-bronze-age-ritual-table-with-all-its-ceramic-dishware-found-in-azerbaijan/ 1/21 7/11/24, 3:43 PM A Bronze Age Ritual Table with All Its Ceramic Dishware Found in Azerbaijan and 750 BC (Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age) before reaching the passes that allowed them to cross the mountains and move westward. The extraordinary discovery was made by a team of archaeologists led by Professor Nicola Laneri from the University of Catania, and Bakhtiyar Jalilov from the Baku Academy of Sciences at the Tava Tepe site in the Agstafa region in western Azerbaijan. The fire marks at the base of the accommodations suggest the cooking of food inside the numerous ceramic containers found scattered on the ground along with bowls and typical black burnished ceramic vessels of the period, as well as long, flat pebbles that might have been used for mixing food. Also inside the kitchen, clay tokens with fingerprints were found, which might have served as receipts to obtain food rations. Another oven was located near the main kitchen and might be associated with other cooking activities, such as bread baking. https://www.labrujulaverde.com/en/2024/07/a-bronze-age-ritual-table-with-all-its-ceramic-dishware-found-in-azerbaijan/ 3/21 7/11/24, 3:43 PM A Bronze Age Ritual Table with All Its Ceramic Dishware Found in Azerbaijan The entire structure was characterized by a monumental entrance with wooden columns and a reed roof that likely covered the entire complex, given the presence of numerous post holes further marking the circularity of the structure, with a diameter of approximately 15 meters. The deposit probably represented the remains of meals consumed outside (perhaps while sitting on the wall/bench), part of a shared and ritual consumption of food among members of nomadic communities. The ceremonial nature of the place is, in fact, hypothesized thanks to the presence of human figurines placed in votive pits and the fact that the central drum and the entrance to the structure (where the kitchen was https://www.labrujulaverde.com/en/2024/07/a-bronze-age-ritual-table-with-all-its-ceramic-dishware-found-in-azerbaijan/ 4/21 7/11/24, 3:43 PM A Bronze Age Ritual Table with All Its Ceramic Dishware Found in Azerbaijan located) were later sealed with all the dishware thanks to a thick layer of compacted yellow earth and the construction of a raw earth circle with a diameter of approximately two meters placed on top, filled with a thick layer of ash.
