Animal Tissues Objectives: Explain that the structure of animal tissues relate to their function; characterize the 4 types animal tissues; describe the different modified cells that lead to adaptation to carry out specialized functions; characterize some plants and animal tissues. ACTIVITY 1: Form Fits Function Match the descriptions that suits on the images 1. It consists of long cells called muscle fibers, each containing many molecules of contractile proteins. It has the special ability to shorten or contract in order to produce movement of the body parts. 2. It consists of cells arranged in continuous sheets, in either single or multiple layers. It covers body surfaces and lines below hollow organs, body cavities and ducts. 3. It consists of a sparse population of cells scattered throughout an extracellular material called a matrix. It provides mechanical support and intercellular exchange. 4. It characterized as being excitable and capable of sending and receiving electrochemical signals that provide the body with information. A. B. Types of Glandular Epithelium 2) B) Mucous Connective Tissue 1)Loose Connective Tissue A) Areolar -Under all epithelia - outer coverings of blood vessels, nerves, esophagus, and other organs -fascia between muscles -pleural and pericardial sacs 1)Loose Connective Tissue B) Adipose -beneath skin -around kidneys, heart, and eyes -breast -abdominal membranes 1)Loose Connective Tissue C) Reticular -found throughout the body, but are most abundant in the reticular tissue of soft organs, such as liver and spleen. 2)Dense Connective Tissue A) Dense Regular -Tendons and ligaments 2)Dense Connective Tissue B) Dense Irregular -dermis of skin -capsules around liver, spleen, and other organs -fibrous sheath around bones 2)Dense Connective Tissue C) Elastic -regions where tendons attach to bones and the intervertebral discs. 3)Cartilage Connective Tissue A) Hyaline B) Fibrocartilage C)Elastic cartilage External ear, larynx, rings around trachea, joint surfaces and growth zones of bones, between ribs and sternum, intervertebral discs. 4)Bone Tissue Compact Bone -Skeleton 5)Liquid Connective Tissue Blood 3) MUSCULAR TISSUE 4) NERVOUS TISSUE
