Anatomy of the heart Edie Sperling, DPT, PhD(c) COMP-NW Heart Function The heart is a muscular pump Move blood around body, delivering nutrients (amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals) and oxygen Removal of waste products CO2 (exhaled from the lungs) and urea (excreted by the kidney) Carries hormones (which act as signal molecules) Carries funcGonal proteins in the blood (anGbodies, albumen, lipoproteins, etc.) NOTE the heart funcGon is interdependent with the funcGons of the lungs and kidneys; when dealing with cardiovascular issues, lung and kidney funcGon always has to be considered.
