genital SYSTEM Objectives Enumerate the component of the Male and Female genital system Explain the anatomical structures of the male and female system Enumerate functions of male and female genital organs. Corelate the function of the genital organs to its anatomical structure MALE PRIMARY SEX ORGAN (THE TESTIS)  Number: two  Function: 1. produces sperm 2. secrets the male sex hormones.  Position: in the scrotum (outside abdomen). MALE PRIMARY SEX ORGAN (THE TESTIS) A. TUNICA ALBUGINEA: White, fibrous capsule that surrounds the testis B. SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES:  contains 2 types of cells: 1. Sertoli cells; gives nutrition to sperms. 2. Germinal cells (spermatogonia): form the sperms. C.STROMA:  It contains interstitial cells of LEYDIG  that secret testosterone THE TESTIS IS SURROUNDED BY A SEROUS SAC CALLED TUNICA VAGINALIS. MALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE EPIDIDYMIS:  Position: along posterior border of testis.  Shape: coiled tube 6 meters long  Parts: head, body and tail.  Function: 1. A storage for the sperms. 2. A maturation site for sperms 3. Secrete seminal fluid (nourish the sperms) MALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE VAS DEFERENCE:  Continuation of tail of epididymis.  Enter the abdomen, pelvis & run on the back of bladder.  It joins the duct of seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct MALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE EJACULATORY DUCT:  Beginning: Union of vas deference with duct of seminal vesicle.  Termination: pierce prostate & open into prostatic urethra.  Function: transport sperms to urethra MALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS 1. 2 SEMINAL VESICLES 1. 1 PROSTATE  Behind urinary bladder  Cone shaped, Surround prostatic urethra, below  Its duct unites with vas deferens to form neck of urinary bladder ejaculatory duct.  Shape: Inverted Pyramid Secrete seminal fluid (for nutrition of sperm) MALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS 3. BULBO-URETHRAL GLAND:  located in perineum.  Its duct open in penile urethra FEMALE PRIMARY SEX ORGANS (THE OVARY): Number: two.  Function:  Produces the ovum  Secretes female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone)  Position: In the pelvic cavity FEMALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE 2 UTERINE TUBE  Length: 10 cm long.  Parts: it consists of: 1. Infundibulum,  close to ovary  has finger like processes (fimbria) 2. Ampulla: the lateral dilated part (site of fertilization) 3. Isthmus: narrowest part outside the uterus. 4. Intramural part: within the wall of uterus FEMALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE UTERUS  Length: 3 inches  Position: in pelvic cavity  Parts: 3 parts. 1. The fundus: free rounded upper end above opening of uterine tube 2. The body: the main triangular part 3. The cervix:  Has a canal (cervical canal):  Open in uterine cavity by opening called internal os  Open in vagina by opening called external os. FEMALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE UTERUS The wall of the body of the uterus consists of three layers:  Perimetrium: external (outer) layer.  Myometrium: middle thick smooth muscle layer.  Endometrium: thin inner layer FEMALE SECONDARY SEX ORGANS THE VAGINA  Definition: It is the copulatory & birth canal.  Position: surround lower part of cervix & in front of rectum & anal canal  Open in the vestibule between urethra & anus REFERENCE BOOK READING Clinical Anatomy by Regions, 10th edition, (LAWRENCE E.
