Our Earth: Continen and Oceans When we look at a globe, we see large parts of the earth's surface covered with water. Water occupies 71 per cent of the planet and land, a mere 29 per cent. This means that about three parts of the earth's surface have water and one part has land. Big land masses on the earth's surface that are surrounded by water on all sides are called continents. There are continents-Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Europe, seven North America and South America. These continents are large stretches of water called oceans. separated by Aglo CONTINENTS Look at the map of the world onthis page. It is Asia's northern hemisphere. Europe and Asia are sometimes together known as Eurasia, The smallest continent, which is also a country, is Australia. It is an island since it is surrounded by water on all sides and is located entirely in the southern hemisphere. Australia, New Zealand and several other islands together form Australasia, The Great Barrier Reef and the Great Australian Desert are two well-known features of this continent. Did youS The Great Barrier Reef knowo Milions of years ago all the continents formed a single supercontinent called Pangaea. As time passed, Pangaea split into pieces, which started drifting away from one another. The space between the pieces started filling up with water. This is how continents and oceans were formed. OCEANS The seven continents of the world are separated from each other by large stretches of water called oceans. There are five oceans in the world. They are the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest in the world. It is almost circular in shape. It separates the Americas from Pacific Ocean Asia and Australia. The world's deepest trench, the Mariana Trench, which has a depth of 10,994 m, lies in it. The second largest ocean is the Atlantic Ocean which separates North and South America from Europe and Africa. It is shaped like the letter 'S. Aunique feature of this ocean is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a submerged mountain range, which has several high peaks that form islands in the ocean. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean and is the only ocean that is named after a country, i.e. India. Asia lies to its north, Australia to its east and Africa to its west. The two important parts of this ocean are the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The Southem Ocean surrounds the continent of Antarctica. It is formed by the merging of the southern parts of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean and lies in the southern hemisphere. The smallest ocean is the Arctic Ocean. Since it is located mostly within the Arctic Circle, it is covered with ice all the time. The North Pole is located here. It is the northernmost point on the earth and the area surrounding it is frozen throughout the vear
