SUBJECT ENGLISH LECTURE COMPANION SEMESTER: 1 PREPARED BY: Prof. Leena Shah Adjective Adjectives are words that are used to describe or modify nouns or pronouns. For example: red, quick, happy, and obnoxious are adjectives because they can describe things —a red hat, the quick rabbit, a happy duck, an obnoxious person. Types of Adjectives  ADJECTIVE OF QUALITY Adjectives of Quality are words that tell us about the kind or qualities of a person or thing being talked about  Chakshu is beautiful lady.  The elephant is a large land animal.  The forest is green.  It is an excellent story.  Helly was a great writer.  ADJECTIVE OF QUANTITY Adjective of quantity indicates the amount or estimated amount of the noun or Pronoun in the sentence.  He gave me some money.  There is no sugar in the tea.  He has put a little milk in the cup. DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES Demonstrative adjective is a word that points out a noun. Demonstrative adjective can:  Tell whether the noun it modifies is singular or plural.  Tell whether the noun it modifies is near or far from the speaker, the person speaking the sentence, as well as point out a fact about the noun it modifies. Example:  These books are not published by Yaksh.  This yellow ribbon is mine and those pink ones are yours.  These mangoes are ripe, but that mango is unripe.  Interrogative Adjectives  Interrogative adjectives are words that modify, or describe, people, places, things, or ideas. In other words, adjectives modify nouns.  Interrogative adjectives are adjectives that modify nouns when there is a question about which one, what kind, or how many. "Interrogative" means to question. These are common interrogative adjectives: which, what, whose 1. Which bag is yours? 2. What movie are you watching in the theatre? 3. What is James looking for? 4. A possessive adjective sits before a noun (or a pronoun) to show who or what owns it Possessive Adjectives are used to show that something or someone belongs to a person. It shows a relationship. The Possessive adjective is always used with a noun. Examples : I like my new mountain bike.
