Over time, species will adapt/ change so they have traits that will help them survive in the conditions they live in. This process is called evolution Charles Darwin developed the theory of evolution. He believes that natural selection is what allows evolution to occur. Natural Selection: individuals of a species that have specific traits will be better at surviving and have more children (reproduce). To summarize: If a certain trait will help a species survive in its environment, individuals with that trait will live longer and have more offspring. (natural selection) More and more of the offspring will be born with that trait leading to EVOLUTION of that species. Activity: Natural Selection Challenge Each student will receive the outline of a moth. Your Task: Decorate your moth so it is adapted to its environment. Pick a spot in the classroom and camouflage your moth. Next science class we will have a special guest who will act as the bird and try to spot as many moths as it can for its next meal. Will your moth survive natural selection? Examples
