[Acquiring Library Materials 2] [LIT 304 SCC] [Study Notes] [Week \#10] [Interlibrary Loans -- Policies] [Common Policies] Interlibrary loans are initiated by the patron when they can't find an item that is not owned by their home library. [When can ILL be requested?] Interlibrary loans can be requested when the patron can't find an item that's not owned by their home library. However, having said that, before initiating an Interlibrary loan request, you should check the library catalogue, the serials list as well as the electronic resources list to see if the material is already owned by the library prior to completing an ILL request. [When can't ILL be requested?] Interlibrary loans can't be requested for the following library materials. They are: - Reference Materials (ex: Almanacs, Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopedias). - Course reserve materials -- this applies to College and University libraries. - Textbooks -- again it applies to College and University libraries. - Periodicals (Articles, Magazines, Newspapers, etc.) - Rare books - Audiovisual material - New items [Week \#11] [Interlibrary Loan -- Ontario Public Library Network] [What is the Network? Who belongs to the network?] The Network is an **Agreement** that is shared between the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport and the Public Libraries of Ontario. Many of the libraries are allowed to be involved in the Network, **BUT** they must follow the Network Participation rules. [ILL Software] [Resource Sharing for Groups (RS4G)] - **Resource Sharing for Groups (RS4G)** is an Interlibrary Loan Software platform. - It is owned by OCLC [D2D] - **D2D** = Discovery to Delivery [Worldshare ILL] **Worldshare ILL** is an Interlibrary loan software that staff can manage Interlibrary loans on. [General Procedures] There are 3 options for completing an **Interlibrary Loan** request, they are: 1. Patron request -- (through a form that a patron can fill out online). 2. Patron initiates the request - (through Discovery to Delivery). 3. Library staff initiate the Interlibrary loan request on behalf of the patron -- (through Worldshare ILL). [Form on a website -- request ] 1. Patron fills out the form on the library's website. 2. Library staff place the request. -- (through Worldshare ILL). [Patron initiates the request -- (through Discovery to Delivery)] - A patron can initiate the request through the Discovery to Delivery Interlibrary loan platform. - D2D is the Ontario libraries union catalogue -- it searches for all of the holdings in all of the Ontario Public Library systems. - When the item is located, a request form is generated, and the patron fills it out, and they submit it. - Libraries receive and process these requests in Worldshare ILL. [Searching Library Holdings] Discovery to Delivery is the Ontario libraries union catalogue -- it searches for all of the holdings in all of the Ontario Public library systems. When the item is located, a request form is generated, the patron fills it out, and they submit it once they are finished. [Week 11.5 -- ASYNCHRONOUS CONTENT] [Who is part of the University Library Network?] University Libraries are a part of the University Library Network. [Software Used] Examples of Interlibrary loan softwares that are used in the University Library Network are: - Alma - Alma Fulfillment Network - Omni - Primo [General Procedures] There are 2 options for completing an **Interlibrary Loan** request, they are: 1. After searching OMNI, the patron initiates the request. 2. A blank request form could be used when the patron can't find the item in OMNI OR by libraries that do not have an **Interlibrary Loan** management system. [Week \#12] [Interlibrary Loan Outside of Network] [When is ILL requested outside of network?] **Interlibrary Loans** are requested outside of the network when the items cannot be found in D2D, Worldshare ILL, or OMNI. [What is the Canadian Library Directory?] The Canadian Library Directory is a contact information place for Interlibrary loans that are available at each library in Ontario, Canada. [What are Library Symbols? What information is provided by them?] Library symbols are used to identify libraries. Library symbols provide information about where the Interlibrary loan department is located at each library. [Role of Library and Archives Canada] The role of **Library and Archives Canada** is to loan items to libraries that do not have the available material at their library. [Document Delivery] [General Procedures] [How it works] - The document is delivered to the patron by email. - In the email, there is a link that takes you directly to the article. [Following Copyright Rules] - The link or article expires after a few days have passed. For example, 5 days. [Cover Page] - A **Cover Page** can be tailored to each library. - A **Cover Page** has all the details that are related to copyright. For example, "for your use only, do not reproduce, share, etc." [Copyright Considerations] [Section 30.2 -- Exceptions: Libraries, Archives, and Museums] - Section 30.2 does not violate the copyright act in the library, because the library is allowed to make a copy of the article for research purposes or for private study reasons. [Conditions of Exception 30.2] - Single copy - Library staff member should inform the patron that the copy is allowed to be used for research purposes or for private study. - If it's for any other reason, it would require permission from the copyright owner. [Restrictions] - Reproducing the article is not allowed. - Do not share the article with other patrons. - Loaning a digital copy has a time limit of 5 business days. [Section 29 -- Exceptions: Fair Dealing] [Copies -- Allowable Amount] - One article - More than one article if the total number of pages do not exceed 10% of the issue. - No more articles from the issue from over a year ago. [Copies -- Fair Dealing] [Purpose] - Fair Dealing under the Copyright Act has made exemptions for: Research, private study, review, criticism, news reporting, education, satire, and parody.
