Nutrition NUTRITION All of the processes involved in consuming and utilizing food for energy, maintenance, and growth ,These processes are ingestion, digestion absorption, metabolism, and excretion INGESTION & Digestion INGESTION The taking of food into the digestive tract, generally through the mouth. Ingestion occurs directly into the stomach, through a feeding tube Digestion Mechanical and chemical processes converting nutrients be absorbed ABSORPTION The process where by the end products of digestion pass through small and large intestines and into blood or lymph systems METABOLISM The conversion of nutrients into energy. Anabolism–the constructive process of metabolism, requires energy Catabolism–the destructive process of metabolism, releases energy EXCRETION The process of eliminating or removing waste products from the body NUTRIENTS The body must have six types of nutrients to function efficiently and effectively: Water, Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins Minerals Essential nutrients Essential nutrients are those that our bodies cannot make in amounts necessary for good health The six classes of essential nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Essential Nutrients Provide energy Carbohydrates and proteins: 4 kcal/g --FAT : 9kcal/g Build and repair tissue Protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and fat Regulate body processes Metabolism: the combination of all chemical processes that take place in living organisms There are two different types of nutrients: macronutrients; micronutrients. Macronutrients provide energy and these include: carbohydrate; protein; fat. Macronutrient Sources of carbohydrate Starch is found in bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, yam, cassava and other starchy food. Can you give some other examples of sources of starch in the diet? Cereal and cereal products are the main source of carbohydrate for adults in Britain (including 18% of carbohydrate coming from bread). www.foodafactoflife.org.uk © Food – a fact of life 2019 1.
