One of the historical works done by IUCN is its list of threatened species of plants and animals also famous by the name of Red List. The IUCN Red List System was initiated in 1963 and since then evaluation of the conservation status of species and subspecies is continuing on a global scale. It provides the conservation status of plant and animal species around the world. IUCN Red List The IUCN Red List criteria include: Population decline Geographic range Small population size Probability of extinction The IUCN Red List categories are: IUCN Red List Categories 1. Extinct (EX): No known living individuals. 2. Extinct in the Wild (EW): Only survives in captivity or outside natural range. 3. Critically Endangered (CR): Extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. 4. Endangered (EN): Very high risk of extinction in the wild. 5. Vulnerable (VU): High risk of extinction in the wild. 6. Near Threatened (NT): Close to being at risk of extinction. 7. Least Concern (LC): Low risk of extinction; widespread and abundant. 8. Data Deficient (DD): Inadequate information to assess risk. 9. Not Evaluated (NE): Has not yet been assessed. Extinct (EX) Criteria: No known living individuals remain anywhere in the world after exhaustive surveys in known and expected habitats over a time frame appropriate to the species' life cycle. Dodo Extinct in the Wild (EW) Criteria: The species survives only in captivity, in cultivation, or as a naturalized population outside its past range. Despite exhaustive surveys, no individuals have been found in the wild for a period of time appropriate to the species' life history. Hawaiian Crow Critically Endangered (CR) Population decline: Reduction of ≥90% over the last 10 years or three generations. Geographic range: Extent of occurrence
