Unit 1 Basic Statistical Concepts Basics of Statistics Statistics is the science of collection, presentation, analysis, and reasonable interpretation of data. A Taxonomy of Statistics Statistical Description of Data Statistics describes a numeric set of data by its Center Variability Shape Statistics describes a categorical set of data by Frequency, percentage or proportion of each category Population and Sample A population is the entire group that you want to draw conclusions about. A sample is the specific group that you will collect data from. The size of the sample is always less than the total size of the population. Sampling Methods Probability sampling methods Every member of the population has a chance of being selected. Non-probability sampling methods Individuals are selected based on non-random criteria, and not every individual has a chance of being included.
