# D'accord! 1 2024 ## Unité 6: Les fêtes ### Leçon 6A: Structures #### 6A.1 Demonstrative adjectives **Point de départ:** To identify or point out a noun with the French equivalent of this/these or that/those, use a demonstrative adjective before the noun. In French, the form of the demonstrative adjective depends on the gender and number of the noun that it goes with. **Demonstrative adjectives:** | Singular | Plural | |-----------------|-----------------| | _ce_ (masculine) | _ces_ (masculine/feminine) | | _cette_ (feminine) | _ces_ (masculine/feminine) | | _cet_ (masculine) | _ces_ (masculine/feminine) | **To make it especially clear that you're referring to something near versus something far, add _-ci_ or _-là_, respectively, to the noun following the demonstrative adjective.** **Note:** The forms of _ce_ can refer to a noun that is near (this/these) or far (that/those). The meaning will usually be clear from context. **Use _-ci_ and _-là_ in the same sentence to contrast similar items.** **Example:** * On prend cette glace-ci, pas cette glace-là. Tu achètes ce fromage-ci ou ce fromage-là? * We'll have this ice cream, not that ice cream. Are you buying this cheese or that cheese? #### 6A.1 Mise en pratique **Remplacez** the nouns in the singular with nouns in the plural and vice versa. Make all other necessary changes. 1. Ces glaces au chocolat sont délicieuses. 2. Ce gâteau est énorme. 3. Ces biscuits ne sont pas bons. 4. Ces invitées sont gentilles. 5. Ces hôtes parlent japonais. 6. Cette fille est allemande. 7. Maman achète ces imperméables pour Julie. 8. Ces bonbons sont délicieux **Monsieur Parfait:** Before the party, the host does a tour of the room and gives his opinion. Complete the text with _ce_, _cette_ or _ces_. **Magazine:** You are looking at an old magazine. Complete the phrases. #### 6A.2 The passé composé with avoir **Point de départ:** French uses two main tenses to talk about past events: the _passé composé_ and the _imparfait_. In this lesson, you will learn how to use the _passé composé_ to indicate actions that began and ended in the past. **The past participle of a regular-_er_ verb is formed by replacing the _-er_ ending of the infinitive with _é_.** **Most regular _-er_ verbs are conjugated in the _passé composé_ as shown below for the verb _parler_.** | Subject Pronoun | Auxiliary Verb | Past participle | Translation | |-----------------|-----------------|---------------|--------------| | *j'* | *ai* | *parlé_ | *I have spoken* | | *tu* | *as* | *parlé* | *You have spoken* | | *il, elle, on* | *a* | *parlé* | *He/She/One has spoken* | | *nous* | *avons* | *parlé* | *We have spoken* | | *vous* | *avez* | *parlé* | *You have spoken* | | *ils, elles* | *ont* | *parlé* | *They have spoken* | **To make a verb negative in the _passé composé_, place _ne/n'_ and _pas_ around the conjugated form of _avoir_.** **The past participle of most regular and irregular _-ir_ verbs is formed by replacing the _-ir_ ending with _i_.** **There are three ways to as yes or no questions in the _passé composé_: add a question mark and use rising intonation, add _est-ce que_ before the subject, or invert the subject pronoun and the conjugated form of _avoir_. For the subject pronouns _tu_, _elle(s)_, and _on_, insert _t_- between the conjugated form of _avoir_ and the subject pronoun.** **Place the adverbs _déjà, encore, bien, mal_, and _beaucoup_ between the auxiliary verb or _pas_ and the past participle.** **The adverbs _hier_ (yesterday) and _avant-hier_ (the day before yesterday) are used often with the _passé composé_.** #### 6A.2 Mise en pratique **Qu'est-ce qu'ils ont fait?** Laurent talks about his weekend in the city with his family.
