CHAPTER 17 – PERSONAL CONNECTIONS 17.1 PATTERNS AND TRENDS IN PEOPLE’S ACTIVITIES TRAVEL Urban areas are areas with a high population and easy access to services. Rural areas are areas with a low population count that are located far away from the nearest urban centre. People move to urban areas for education, jobs or employment, access to services, etc. MIGRATION Migration is the movement of people from one location to another. MIGRATION In Australia just over a quarter (27%) of our population was born overseas in 2011. This has increased from the 2001 figure of 23.1%. The origin of our migrants consists of: 5.3% of Australia’s population born in the UK, 2.5% from NZ, 1.8% from China, 1.5% from India, and Vietnam and Italy each contribute 0.9% of the total population. ACTIVITY: PEOPLE MOVIN Search the internet and find the People Movin website (http://peoplemov.in/), then respond to the following: 1.Identify the percentage of the world’s population that live outside their countries. TOURISM Tourism is becoming the main income source for developing countries. There are over 1 billion people travelling as tourists to other countries. Top 5 travel destinations: France, US, Spain, China, Italy. The most travelled are Chinese people who spent US$129 billion in 2013 on international tourism. TOURISM The main purpose of travelling is: TOURISM IN AUSTRALIA Tourism contributes $34 billion annually to the Australian economy. There are two types of tourism: international and domestic. Over 7 million Australians are travelling overseas every year. Domestic travel accounts for three- quarters ($25 billion) of the tourism spend in Australia annually. ACTIVITY 1. Create a column graph that shows the top three states for tourists to visit. ANSWER 1.Column graph should show: New South Wales – 33% Queensland – 25% Victoria – 24% LEISURE AND CULTURE Culture is the customs, habits, beliefs, social organisation and ways of life that characterise different groups and communities. Hosting events brings economic, social and cultural elements to the city.
