Study Notes
Hoffman Estates Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines
Equipment Guidelines - Gas Alert Quattro
- The Gas Alert Quattro atmospheric monitor is used to detect gas levels in poor air quality situations
- The monitor should be inspected daily by the apparatus operator
Daily Inspection Guidelines
- Remove the monitor from its storage case and turn it on in fresh air
- The monitor will undergo a warm-up period and self-check
- Check the battery indicator to ensure it's operating correctly
- Clear peak hold readings by double-tapping the on/off button
- Cycle through screens until you reach the "Hold to reset peaks" screen, then press and hold the on/off button until the check mark appears
- Ensure all sensors read zero, except oxygen which should read approximately 21.0%
- If any step is missed, the monitor will default back to the monitoring screen
- Turn off the monitor and return it to its storage case after inspection
Functional Bump Test Guidelines
- A functional bump test ensures the sensors are properly operating prior to use
- Perform a functional bump test before each incident
- Use the bump gas bottle and attachment hose to perform the test
- Place the cover over the sensor housing and tighten the screw
- Squeeze the trigger on the bump gas bottle (approximately 5 seconds) until the monitor alarms
- Check the display to ensure all sensors have a positive reading
- Clear peak holds after the functional bump test
Battery Changes
- Fire department personnel are responsible for changing batteries when the battery indicator shows a weak level
- Remove the monitor from its storage case and turn it over
- Remove the battery case cover using the supplied tool
- Loosen the screw in the middle of the monitor
- Remove the battery holder and replace all three batteries (AA) with spare batteries
- Return the battery case cover to its original location and ensure the battery is operating correctly
- Complete a work order to the Hazardous Materials Division to communicate spare battery usage
Use and Maintenance
- The Gas Alert Quattro monitor should be used whenever poor air quality is expected or suspected
- The monitor should be inspected and bump tested prior to use
- If the monitor fails to function properly or fails the functional bump test, it should be taken out of service and sent to the Hazardous Materials Coordinator
- No repairs should be attempted by fire department personnel unless properly trained and authorized by the Hazardous Materials Coordinator
