Unit 7 Inmates and Gender Lesson 1 Female Inmates Lesson Goal You will be able to monitor female inmates. Think About This Supervising female inmates and supervising male inmates can be similar in some ways and very different in others. Men and women are different, and they bring these differences into the cor- rectional setting as inmates and as officers. Some supervision techniques used by a female officer supervising a female inmate may not be appropriate for a male officer to use when supervising a female inmate. Characteristics The courts incarcerate the majority of female inmates because of drug-related charges and economic crimes, such as passing worthless checks, forgery, fraud, and other non-violent crimes; however, the incidence of younger females committing violent crimes is on the rise. Female inmates are the fastest growing criminal population. ✅ CO771.1. Know the common characteristics of female inmates within a correctional facility Women, especially older female inmates, are less likely to join STGs. They tend to be more concerned with relationships, form small groups, and maintain the same roles they had outside the correc- tional environment. They do, however, tend to create surrogate families. These surrogate families take the place of their families on the outside and contain hierarchies with mother, father, child, and grandparent figures. Female inmates tend to form relationships based more on companion- ship than for sexual reasons. Female inmates tend to struggle more with depression, guilt, and worry about their children, if they are mothers. They freely express their fear, anger, and affection verbally, while men tend to express their feelings physically. Female inmates tend to base their self-esteem on what others think about them rather than what they think about themselves. They can have a lower self-esteem than male inmates do because of issues related to sexual abuse and domestic violence before incarceration. Female inmates have higher instances of relieving stress through self-mutilation and self-harm than male inmates. Chapter 7 Supervising Special Populations / 237 Many female inmates have a higher tolerance for others entering their personal space until an unwelcome person attempts to put their hands on them. This can lead to a physical fight. They are frequently more concerned with cleanliness and having a neat environment. ✅ CO771.2. Know the common methods of manipulation officers may encounter when supervising female inmates Female inmates have a high tendency to manipulate staff. Common methods of manipulation include using sex to form a relationship with a staff member or another inmate. They also tend to be more inclined than male inmates are to provide false information to achieve an agenda. Programs and Services Generally, female inmates are more willing to participate in programs available in custodial settings than males, because these present additional opportunities to bond and socialize with other inmates. ✅ CO771.3. Know the types of programs and services available to female inmates Some of the programs available to both male and female inmates include: career and technical education character awareness and motivation special education boot camp faith-based residential services and child visitation as indicated in a Department of Children and Families case plan Some of the career and technical education programs available to female inmates include: web development technology support services automotive technology equine care technology career services commercial foods and culinary arts technology support services fashion design services cosmetology air conditioning drafting refrigeration and heating technology Medical services available to female inmates are gynecological, obstetric, and prenatal. 238 / Florida Basic Recruit Training Program (CO): Volume 1
