Political science is a classical discipline that deals with the study of political phenomena. Its goal is to deepen human understanding of the forms and nature of political action and to develop theoretical tools for interpreting politically meaningful phenomena. -University of Jyvaskyla Philosophers in Political science Aristotle “Father of political science” -Man is by nature a political animal Book: Politics Niccolo Machiavelli “Father of modern political science” -The ends justify the means Book: The Prince Subdisciplines of Political science Political Theory – examines the contemporary application of political concepts such as human rights, equality, peace and justice. Comparative politics – is a branch of political science that aims to provide context to the differences in government and political systems. Subdisciplines of Political science International relations – the study of the state-to-state relations and the wider margin of the impacts of globalization. Political behavior – this field covers the attitudes, knowledge, and actions of an individual in response to political variables. Subdisciplines of Political science Public policy – this inquiries on the types of governmental policies and underlying motivations for their enactment and implementation. Public administration – this branch examines the various administrative schemes implemented by government officials. Politics Alfred Boyer – politics is the interaction between civil society and the government in the activity of governance. Max Weber – politics is the exercise of power within a state. David Easton – politics is the authoritative allocation of scarce values. Nation and State Nation – a group of persons belonging to one community, having one culture and language, and living the same experience. State – it is a community of persons, living in a specific territory, having a government that commands obedience within the territory and is free from external control. Elements of State People – refers to the population living in a country. Territory – refers to the jurisdiction of the state. 3 Domains of territory Terrestrial, aerial, and fluvial Government – the agency wherein the will of the state is manifested. Sovereignty – refers to the supreme power of the state. 2 types of sovereignty: internal and external sovereignty Inherent powers of the state Police power - Is the power of the state to enact and enforce laws and to regulate property and liberty in the promotion of the general welfare of the people. Power of eminent domain - This power enables the state to take property for public use payment of just compensation.
