There was a king named Acrisius, of Argos. One day he went home from Delphi, depressed as he received a dreadful oracle “No sons shall be born to you, the priestess had told him. But you shall have a grandson, and by his hand you shall die.” He had a daughter and came the idea of avoiding his fate by locking his own daughter up in a chamber. Unfortunately, the Chamber had an open roof and did not account for the Gods, allowing Zeus to go through and give his maiden daughter Danae, a child. Which she then hid from her father when it was born. However, Acrisius found out, he was then filled with fear, instead of killing the baby as the gods might comeback for him, he instead placed them inside a great chest set adrift upon the great sea. The waves then carried them to an island known as Seraphos, there a fisherman named Dictys saw the box, which he dragged to the land and opened to see a Mother and her child. His heart was moved, he took them to his wife for he was childless, this is where the Perseus grew in the fisherfolk’s humble home. Danae later on became the wife of Dictys’s brother, Polydectes, as Perseus grew up to be a tall youth, his stepfather Polydectes hated him as his mother Danae doted on him. Polydectes then asked his stepson to go to an adventure, Perseus agreed. The adventure Polydectes tasked him is to take off the head of Medusa. As it would bring Perseus great fame. Perseus then set off to face Medusa, without a knowledge of the danger of his adventure. For Medusa is one of the three Gorgons, winged monsters that lived alone on an island. Of the three Gorgons, Medusa was the only one that could be slain; however, Perseus has no knowledge of this. As Perseus was getting discouraged of the long journey, he met a young man of great beauty, wearing winged sandals, and a winged cap. Carrying a hand on his hand. Perseus knew at once that his was a God named Hermes and he was overjoyed when Hermes spoke. Hermes ordered Perseus to go to the gray women to get armors. However, he has to force them by snatching their eyes, as they would not do so willingly. Hermes gave Perseus a curved sword, and Athene his sister gave Perseus a shield, that of which is bright, she also informed him to not look into the Gorgon’s eyes instead look to the shield so that he may not be turned to stone, Athene disappeared and Perseus accompanied by Hermes went on with his journey. They arrived to the end of the Earth; there they saw the gray women. Perseus hid until the gray women removed their eyes to pass it on. He then snatched it, they howled and without vision after the grey women reluctantly told the way to the Nymphs of the North. Perseus then met the happy beings who possessed the three priceless armor he needed, the winged shoes, the helmet of invincibility, and a magical wallet. The Nymphs heard of his reason and gave the armor to him willingly, Perseus then hurriedly went to the fearful island of the Gorgons. There he saw statues of beast and men turned to stone by the eyes of the Gorgons. Through his shield he saw all of them sleeping, yet he knows not of which is Medusa. Then Athene spoke informing him that the one closest to the beach is Medusa. He then went and with a single strike cut her head. Placed it within a magical wallet that was given to him. He then ran and with the help of the winged sandals, he managed to lose the pursuing sisters. Perseus now wandering through the desert as he was lost for Hermes had long since left, with Medusa’s tears turning to venomous snakes that would inhabit the desert. He came across a beautiful maiden. Fastened by chains, to a cliff by the sea. He then asked why was the maiden in such a situation as well as her name. She was Andromeda, Daughter of Cepherus, King of the Ethiopians, as well as Cassiopeia. She is a sacrifice for the Gods are Jealous of her mother’s beauty and they do not wish for mortals to surpass them. Poseidon has sent an envoy and only her death would quell this anger. Andromeda shrieked as she saw the raging waves, her mother, and father held her. As Perseus commanded them to stop as well as asked for Andromeda in return. They agreed and Perseus went on to fight and win against the monster. That same day they were married, the townsfolk celebrated their marriage, and had a massive feast. However, Andromeda’s uncle, Phineas came in the banquet hall, declaring to take back his destined wife. Cepherus then justified that, it was well earned for it was a better outcome than death. He would then continue to ask where his brother was, when Andromeda was chained and was near death. Enraged, Phineas tried to kill Perseus, however as the spear misses and lands on the sofa of where Perseus once was, Perseus threw it back at Phineas, had Phineas not hid he would’ve died. A fight ensued between 200 men and Perseus. Perseus Commanded that those who are friend of his to turn their eyes away as he used the head of Medusa to turn 200 men into stones. After which he continued to give his brother- in-law a merciful death. He then went back to Polydectes, with his wife Andromeda. Polydectes, not believing that Perseus had actually slain Medusa, was enraged for Perseus had come empty-handed. Perseus once again commanded those that are his friends should look away and close their eyes. As he once again showed Medusa, turning his stepfather to stone. He bowed to never again to use this weapon as he gave the head to Athene, who kept it forever. Now that Polydectes was dead, Danae yearned to go home and reconcile with his father. Dictys was then assigned the king of the island. Perseus then returned to Greece with her mother and Andromeda. Unfortunately, Acrisius was away from home he was in Larissa, where the games are being held. Perseus then went there and it was then that the oracle that Acrisius heard fell upon him. For when Perseus threw the discus, it swerved to one side and landed among the spectators and killed an old man. The old man was Acrisius, who had gone through cruel lengths, to avoid the fate the god’s ordained for him. Act 4 1.
