Bridgeport Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures COMPANY RIDING POSITIONS AND RADIO DESIGNATIONS # 506 I. 10/16/09 PURPOSE To ensure uniformity within the Bridgeport Fire Department as to the riding positions and radio call signs on our Engines, Ladders and Rescue Company. II. RESPONSIBILITIES A. Battalion Chief: Shall ensure that riding assignments and radio call signs are followed for fire-ground accountability. B. Company Officer: Shall ensure that all members are familiar with this SOP for accountability purposes, riding on the apparatus, and for proper use of the radio. C. Firefighters: Shall understand this SOP and others associated with company operations. III. DEFINITIONS Riding Position – The seat with in the apparatus in which the member rides. Radio Call Sign – Radio ID associated with the riding position. IV. PROCEDURES A. Upon assignment to a company, members shall ride in assigned positions and communicate with the proper radio call sign. Positions and Radio ID’s are as follows: ENGINE COMPANY: 1. Officer a) b) c) Rides in the passenger front of the apparatus Radio call sign is the Engine and #, (i.e. Engine 1) Shall carry the Thermal Imaging Camera if equipped 2. Pumper Engineer a) Drives the apparatus and operates the pump b) Radio call sign is the Engine and # Pump (i.e. Engine 1 Pump) c) Shall ensure that the apparatus is operational upon arrival for every shift Page 1 Bridgeport Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures # 506 COMPANY RIDING POSITIONS AND RADIO DESIGNATIONS 10/16/09 3rd Firefighter (Hydrant position) a) Rides behind the Engineer b) Radio call sign is the Engine and # Hydrant (i.e. Engine 1 Hydrant) c) Shall ensure that the LDH has the proper adaptors and the hydrant bag is complete 4th Firefighter (Nozzle position) a) Rides behind the Officer b) Radio call sign is the Engine and # Nozzle (i.e. Engine 1 Nozzle) c) Shall ensure that the attack nozzles are in place LADDER COMPANY: 1. Officer a) b) c) Rides in the passenger front of the apparatus Radio call sign is the Ladder and # (i.e. Ladder 10) Shall carry the thermal imaging camera and a 4-foot hook 2. Ladder Company Driver a) Drives the apparatus and operates the aerial b) Radio call sign is the Ladder # and Driver (i.e. Ladder 10 Driver) c) Shall ensure that the apparatus is operational upon arrival for every shift d) Shall carry a 6’ hook and saw if needed 3. 3rd Firefighter (Can) a) Rides behind the Chauffeur b) Radio call sign is the Ladder # Can (i.e. Ladder 10 Can) c) Shall carry a 6-foot hook and pressurized water extinguisher 4. 4th Firefighter (Irons) a) Rides behind the Officer b) Radio call sign is the Ladder # Irons (i.e. Ladder 10 Irons) c) Shall carry a set of Irons and the Hydra-ram RESCUE COMPANY: 1. Rescue Engineer a) Drives the apparatus and operates the pump and vehicle systems b) Radio call sign is the Rescue 5 Pump. c) Shall ensure that the apparatus is operational upon arrival for every shift d) Shall carry a 6’ hook and thermal imaging camera 3. 3rd Firefighter (Irons) a) Rides behind the Engineer, b) Radio call sign is the Rescue Irons c) Shall carry a set of irons and a thermal imaging camera 4. 4th Firefighter (Can) a) Rides behind the Officer. b) Radio call sign is the Rescue Can c) Shall carry a 6’ pike pole and pressurized water extinguisher 5. 5th Firefighter (Nozzle) a) Rides in forward facing center seat b) Radio call sign is Rescue Nozzle c) Shall carry a set of Irons and the Hydra-ram. Is the assigned nozzle firefighter should the Rescue stretch off the apparatus B. This and the procedures to follow shall be adhered to, to insure accountability at the multitude of emergencies the department will respond to and operate at.
