## Bagtil på ganen ligger flere huller - `foramen palatinum majus (2)` - `foramina palatina minora (3)` These holes are exits for canals that go from the bottom of the `fossa pterygopalatina` to the palate. Through these canals run nerves from the `n. maxillaris` to the palate and gums. ## Fossa pterygopalatina This fossa ends in a point downwards. It is formed where the `processus pterygoideus (5)` and `maxilla (6)` meet. The canals that go to the palate begin at this point. The nerves (6) run to the palate and gums. ## Fossa infratemporalis On the back surface of the upper jaw, in the front part of the `regio infratemporalis`, are two or three `foramina alveolaria (1)`. These holes are a couple of centimeters above the necks of the molars and go "through" the back wall of the jaw. The `foramina alveolaria` connect the `fossa infratemporalis` to the jaw. The posterior nerves to the teeth in the upper jaw, the `nn. alveolares (7c)`, pass through these holes. The nerves go from the `fossa infratemporalis` to the jaw, and continue along the back wall. ## Fossa pterygopalatina - The `fossa pterygopalatina` is connected to the nasal cavity through the `foramen sphenopalatinum (10)`. This hole can be seen by looking in the medial direction through the upper part of the `fossa pterygopalatina`. - There is a connection to the orbit through `fissura orbitalis inferior (9)`. - The `fossa pterygopalatina` is connected to the oral cavity through canals that end on the palate in the `foramen palatinum majus` and `foramina palatina minora`. - In the back, it is connected to the cranial cavity through the `foramen rotundum (11)`. ## Cavitas nasi - The `cavitas nasi` is connected to the `fossa pterygopalatina` through the `foramen sphenopalatinum (2)`. - This hole is located at the top of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity, directly behind the turbinates. - The `cavitas nasi` is connected to the oral cavity through the `canalis incisivus (1)`, which opens into the `foramen incisivum (1)` on the hard palate. - There is a connection from the `cavitas nasi` to the orbit through the lacrimal canal, `canalis nasolacrimalis`. - The upper opening of the canal is located medially in the orbital floor, and its lower opening is near the bottom of the `cavitas nasi`. - The opening is hidden by the lower turbinate. - Finally, the `cavitas nasi` and the cranial cavity have a connection through the holes (4) in the sieve plate, `lamina cribrosa`, which belong to the ethmoid bone.
