TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL APPARATUS 310.009a APPARATUS STARTUP AND SHUT DOWN PROCEDURES EFFECTIVE: DECEMBER 2017 Current Revision Date: 11/26/18 Author’s Name/Rank: Jonathan Lopez-Galvan, Engineer Next Revision Date: Review Level: 11/26/23 1 PURPOSE Provide instruction to members on performing a detailed startup and shut down of Fresno Fire Department emergency response apparatus. APPLICATION With the advancement of fire apparatus technology, the necessity of proper startup and shut down procedures are important steps to ensure the on-board computer systems are properly cycled according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The addition of computer driven gauges, engine and transmission components, as well as fuel and emission control devices being properly cycled will reduce the occurrence of electrical system malfunctions. OPERATIONAL POLICY All members shall follow the appropriate process whenever starting or shutting down emergency apparatus. OPERATIONAL GUIDELINE This section intentionally left blank. PROCESS Startup Apparatus fitted with separate battery master/ignition switches should be started in the following order: Section 310.009a Page 1 of 3 1. Turn the battery master switch to the “on” position; this will energize the electrical system from the batteries. A green light indicates the switch is in the “on” position. The gauges reset to zero and the pointers vibrate briefly when the master switch is first activated. 2. Wait 3 to 5 seconds for initial battery diagnostics to occur. 3. Turn the ignition switch to the “on” position; this switches power from the batteries to the starter button and the onboard computerized accessories. When the ignition switch is activated, a green light will indicate the switch is in the “on” position. The gauges will do a full sweep and the icon on the instrument panel will illuminate for 5 seconds indicating the gauges are operational. 4. Depress the starter button to start the apparatus. Shut Down Properly shutting down the apparatus is just as vital as the startup procedure. The correct sequence provides the electronics onboard the chance to cycle and store diagnostic information in its database, which a technician would use to identify mechanical problems should they arise. Following a proper cool down period of low speed city driving, or idling for at least five minutes to allow an adequate turbo charger cool down, apparatus should be shut down in the following order: 1. When the apparatus is parked, turn the ignition switch to the “off” position. 2. Wait for the engine to completely stop running. 3. Turn the battery master switch to the “off” position. 4. Attach the electrical shoreline when parked in the apparatus bay. INFORMATION Built- In Diagnostics If communication between the chassis and gauges is lost, a message stating “No Data” should be displayed and the icons pertaining to those messages should flash at an irregular rate. An amber message light should illuminate referring to the LCD screen for a message. On the LCD screen, a communication error should appear. Shut down the system and restart. If the problem continues, notify the shop. Section 310.009a Page 2 of 3 DEFINITIONS This section intentionally left blank. CROSS REFERENCES No cross references recognized.
