Bridgeport Fire Department Policy #306 Effective Date : 05/01/2014 Revision Date: Fire Chief Signature SAFETY BELTS WHILE USING AERIAL APPARATUS 1. Purpose 1.1. 2. Applicability 2.1. 3. 4. 5. To provide all members, particularly officers and operators, with general safety direction for using Ladder Safety belts, while operating the Bridgeport Fire Department’s Aerial and Tower Ladder apparatus. This policy applies to all members of the Bridgeport Fire Department. Definitions 3.1. Aerial Ladder - Any of the BFD’s “Straight Stick” ladders currently Ladders 10 and 11, Engine 16 and Spare Ladders (L211, L26) 3.2. Tower Ladder - Any of the BFD’s elevating platforms currently Ladders 5 and 6 and Spare Tower Ladders. Responsibility 4.1. All members shall practice safe operations when operating on any aerial device and ensure they have all the proper PPE including, but not limited to, a ladder safety belt. 4.2. Drivers/Operators shall be well versed in the operation of the truck and its limitations and inherent risks. 4.3. Company Officer’s shall ensure proper and safe operations of all members in their command during training and emergency operations. Policy 5.1. It is the policy of the Bridgeport Fire Department that all members wear all necessary PPE including but not limited to Ladder Safety Belts to complete assigned tasks/training, while operating in/on Aerial Apparatus, in Bridgeport Fire Department Policy #306 Effective Date : 05/01/2014 Revision Date: Fire Chief Signature SAFETY BELTS WHILE USING AERIAL APPARATUS accordance with OSHA regulation and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. 6. Procedure 6.1. All members shall wear a ladder safety belt while operating in a tower ladder bucket and/or operating from the tip of an aerial. 6.2. The hook shall be secured to fixed anchor points in the bucket or a structural member of the ladder such as a rung or side bar. 6.3. When members are required to step off the aerial to a surface, such as getting off ladder and going into a window, they shall only unhook when they are sure they have sure footing and have safely transitioned to the surface. 6.4. When members are required to work from the bucket, they shall do so while properly tethered and the doors are closed and latched. BY ORDER OF THE FIRE CHIEF
