Elizabethan Age (1558-1603) - Developed the arts during her reign From clothing, architecture, the humanities, and the role of women - She made England the world’s first “superpower” - The most powerful navy, replacing Spain Age of William Shakespeare, late 1500s, Arguably the greatest playwright Shakespeare’s works were first Performed at the Globe theater in London - He focused on human flaws, desires, and conflicts, and he drew from the classics Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Henry V, Much Ado About Nothing, etc. Shakespeare’s many works: plays, poems, sonnets and others impacted society, education, the English language, entertainment, and the humanities Shakespeare began a standardization of the English language in the 17th and 18th centuries. - Correctly spelling words became more common. - He introduced over 1,700 words into the English language. He expanded the idea of characterization, plot development, and genre. - He connected romance and tragedy; He believed that tragedy required romance. Impact of the Renaissance The Arts; - Drew from classical themes, created more realistic depictions of life, people, and secular subjects - Writers began to use the vernacular, not Latin - The arts praised the individual: humanism, literature began to include everyday people, not just aristocracy - Intellectual reasoning and creativity began to take hold in societies Changes in Society - The Gutenberg printing press - Access to books in the vernacular, increased desire to learn - More knowledge available led to discoveries in many fields - Better understanding of the Law, people’s rights, more law books - Setting the stage for the scientific revolution - The spread of information drove the renaissance
