INDIAN AFFAIRS Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2024 Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2024 at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh The three-day conference, running, showcased India’s semiconductor strategy and policy with the aim of positioning the country as a global semiconductor hub. PM Modi expressed gratitude to SEMI members, noting that India is the eighth country to host such a global semiconductor event. He emphasized the current favourable timing for the semiconductor industry in India, stating, “In 21st-century India, the chips are never down.” Maharashtra has announced to establish Tribal University in Nashik The governor of Maharashtra Shri. C. P. Radhakrishnan has announced in the event that Maharashtra state will establish the tribal university for the development of tribal students and for their better future. This university will be established in the Nashik district of Maharashtra. It would be established in Nashik. An important quality education to Kindergarten Level to the post-graduation level. In this University, a total 80% of the seats would be reserved for the tribal students. It is not to let tribals remain tribals but train them to compete in the world. We need to give modern education to the tribals living in isolation to make them competent. Union Cabinet approved BioE3 Policy for high-performance biomanufacturing in India The Union Cabinet of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved a groundbreaking policy aimed at revolutionizing the country’s biotechnology sector. The BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) sets the stage for fostering high-performance biomanufacturing, positioning India at the forefront of global biotechnological innovation. The policy focuses on providing robust support for Research and Development (R&D) and entrepreneurship across various thematic sectors. The approach would aim to accelerate technology development and enhance commercialisation of biotechnology innovations. Cabinet approved PM-eBus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had approved the PM-eBus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme with a budget of INR 3,435.33 crore. This initiative is designed to promote the deployment and operation of electric buses (e-buses) by Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) from FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29. The objective is to support the deployment of over 38,000 e-buses, ensuring their operation for up to 12 years from the date of deployment. Cabinet approved PM e-DRIVE scheme for electric vehicle revolution The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme to promote electric mobility in India. The scheme, with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years, aims to expedite EV adoption, improve air Rs. 3,679 crores allocated for subsidies to incentivize e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and e-buses, supporting over 28 lakh electric vehicles, and reduce the environmental impact of transportation. Rs. 2,000 crore allocated for installing 72,300 fast chargers across cities and highways, addressing range anxiety among EV users. The PM E-DRIVE scheme is a pivotal step towards reducing pollution, securing fuel resources, and fostering sustainable transportation solutions aligned with India’s net-zero 2070 target. 1 13th Sep, 2024 222024 BANKING AND FINANCE RBL Bank and DMI Finance launched co-branded credit card RBL Bank and DMI Finance Private Limited (“DMI”), part of the DMI Group, announced a strategic agreement to provide co-branded credit cards to DMI Finance’s existing customers. This collaboration intends to increase credit card access to clients in India’s metro and non-metro cities by combining RBL Bank’s extensive credit card experience, with DMI’s proven track record of enabling digital financial inclusion at scale. The credit card would offer spend-driven perks such as expedited reward points, no-cost EMI alternatives, and discounts at popular merchants. This partnership will enhance financial inclusion in India by bringing credit card access to underserved, creditworthy individuals across the country. REPORTS AND RANKINGS Switzerland was ranked as the best country of the world In a new survey which is called “Best countries for 2024” it is found that Switzerland was crowned as the best country in the world. Switzerland achieved this fate in the third year successively. This survey has included 89 countries for the results. The report was published by US News & World Report in its “Best Countries Ranking 2024”. In the latest ranking, Switzerland is followed by Japan, the United States of America, Canada and Australia. India ranked at number 33 on the list this year, dropping three spots from its place on the list in 2023. Only Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea managed to crack the top 25 from Asia. APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS Subroto Mondal appointed as MD & CEO of IFFCO Tokio General Insurance IFFCO Tokio General Insurance Company Limited (IFFCO Tokio) has appointed Subrata Mondal as its new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Mondal, who has been associated with the company since 2001, brings over 36 years of experience in the insurance industry to his new leadership role. IFFCO-Tokio General is a 51:49 joint venture between the Indian Farmers Fertilisers Co-operative (IFFCO) and Tokio Marine Group – one of the world’s largest insurance companies based in Japan. R S Sharma has been appointed as chairperson of ONDC A former chief of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and chief executive of National Health Authority (NHA), RS Sharma has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Sharma, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 1978 batch officer with a distinguished career across the Central and state governments, is credited with leading reforms and leveraging Information Technology (IT) to simplify administrative processes.
