Some questions will test students’ ability to apply their knowledge and understanding of concepts, others will require the student to: process information from data tables, diagrams, and graphs complete data tables and column and/or line graphs Students will also be assessed on their ability to: use the scientific method, including assessment of validity, reliability, accuracy and to discuss fair testing. identify aims, hypotheses given a description of an experiment. discuss and/or explain results and make conclusions given an experimental scenario. Students will be tested on the outcomes listed below that are selected from the student sheets for The Power of Waves, Chemical Cauldron and Newtonian World: The Power of Waves - Electricity 19. Construct and compare series and parallel circuits. 20. Draw and read simple series and parallel circuit diagrams using correct conventions. 21. Define and determine the current, voltage and resistance in a circuit including calculations involving the use of Ohm’s law. Chemical Cauldron 1. State the Law of Conservation of mass and relate this to chemical reactions 2. Differentiate between reactants and products in a chemical reaction and use correct conventions to write word equations 3. Identify some common compounds and write correct chemical formulae for them. 4. Use valency to write formulae of simple ionic substances 5. Use naming conventions to write correct formulae for selected covalent compounds 6. Balance chemical equations when formulae are provided 7. Recognise and give examples of the following types of chemical reactions: synthesis decomposition acid-carbonate acid-metal corrosion of metals neutralization combustion precipitation 8. Write word equations for a range of specified reaction types (as listed above) 9. Write balanced chemical equations for a specified range of reaction types (as listed above) 10. Define the terms endothermic and exothermic and give examples of reactions which are classified by these terms. 2|Page 2024 YR10 AT4 Yearly Notification 11. Draw and interpret energy diagrams to represent exothermic and endothermic reactions. 12. Perform and describe the characteristic tests for the following gases: carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen. 15. Describe the impact of acid rain on metals in the built environment. 16. Use the activity series to predict the reactions between metals and replacement acids (HCl and H2SO4) 17. Investigate and summarise the conditions required for the corrosion of iron 18. State the properties of acids and bases 19. Use indicators to differentiate between acids and bases 20. Describe everyday neutralisation reactions - including managing soil pH, treating acid indigestion and the neutralization processes which occur in the digestive tract 21. Explain the difference between complete and incomplete combustion and relate this to the use of the Bunsen Burner 22. Write word equations for and describe the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration 23. Explain the impact of combustion of fossil fuels on the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere 24. Discuss the use of fossil fuel resources in terms of the impact on society and the environment 25. Use solubility rules to predict if compounds will be soluble or insoluble 26. Describe the factors which affect the rate of a reaction (including temperature, surface area, concentration and use of a catalyst) 27. Use collision theory to explain the factors which affect the rate of a reaction Newtonian World 1. Differentiate between distance and displacement giving examples 2. Use vector and scalar measurements 3. Interpret and draw graphs of motion distance/displacement/speed/velocity 4. Differentiate between speed and velocity 5. Calculate speed, distance, time using the formula Average speed = distance/time 6. Use correct units to describe speed and acceleration 13. Calculate acceleration using the formula Acceleration = change in speed /time taken 3|Page 2024 YR10 AT4 Yearly Notification SUGGESTIONS FOR REVISION Revise class notes and make summary notes using learning outcomes listed above. These may be concept maps, flash cards, dot points or any other format that you find useful. Complete past papers which can be found on the NGS Library Page Review Stile lessons linked to each topic being assessed. Use Core Science 5 – Chapters 3, 5, 7, 9, (Box of Books) to access material to support your note - making and as a source of questions. N.B. not all information in the text is relevant – make sure you find the sections which match up with the content outcomes listed on this notification. Equipment Required Blue/black pens Lead pencils (sharpened for diagrams) and eraser Ruler Calculator THE MARKING RUBRIC Students will be assessed on their ability to: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the content interpret and analyse data use scientific language to communicate information apply the scientific method 4|Page 2024 YR10 AT4 Yearly Notification RULES AND REGULATIONS EXAMINATION RULES & REGULATIONS: The specific rules and regulations for examinations are published on SchoolBox beforehand. Please study them carefully. ILLNESS / MISADVENTURE APPEALS (YEARS 10-12) Students who must miss an examination, or whose performance in the examination has been affected by factors beyond their control have the right to submit an Illness / Misadventure Appeal (Blue Form). These are available from the Director of Studies. It is your responsibility to let the school know as soon as possible that you have been affected by illness or misadventure. DIGITAL DEVICES Students should not bring mobile phones or programmable watches (such as an iWatch) into an examination room. FOOD AND DRINK Students are NOT permitted to eat in an examination room. Water may be brought into the room, but only in a clear container. MALPRACTICE AND BREACHES OF ASSESSMENT AND EXAMINATION RULES All work produced in an examination (including submitted works and practical examinations) must be a student’s own work. Malpractice, including plagiarism, could lead to a student receiving zero marks and may jeopardise a student’s results. It is your responsibility to ensure that: the planning, development, content, and presentation of this task is entirely your own work. it has not been copied from another person’s work. the words, ideas, designs, or workmanship of others in this task have received appropriate acknowledgement. you are aware of the school’s rules and expectations regarding plagiarism and malpractice. this work has not been submitted, in any part, for any other examination or assessment task in any other course.
