What will I need for entry? REQUIREMENTS AS AT 2024 For the 6 Year Masters Programs (Clinical, Clinical Neuropsych, Organisational) Minimum WAM of 75 for Years 1-3 of APAC accredited AQF Level 7 qualification or equivalent in psychology, including international qualification(s) deemed equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society Minimum WAM of 80 in Year 4 (Honours or 4th year equivalent) of APAC accredited AQF Level 8 psychology qualification or equivalent, including international qualification(s) deemed equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society For the 5 + 1 Pathway (Master of Professional Psychology) Minimum WAM of 65 for Years 1-3 of APAC accredited AQF Level 7 qualification or equivalent in psychology, including international qualification(s) deemed equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society Minimum WAM of 75 in Year 4 (Honours or 4th year equivalent) of APAC accredited AQF Level 8 psychology qualification or equivalent, including international qualification(s) deemed equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society PLUS Relevant work experience Eligibility for provisional or full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia 28 Selection Process We start by shortlisting based on a UAC application and a supplementary form We read your two referee reports We look for genuine motivation and interest by checking results, any work experience and reading your motivational statements We invite people shortlisted to attend a MMI (mini multiple interview) event At the MMIs you can expect to meet multiple members of staff or supervisors who ask you different interview questions, to participate in role plays or respond to scenarios Results for the MMI/interviews are collated and candidates rank ordered CSP criteria is pre-determined. Offers are made for CSP places and the remaining are fee-paying places. 29 What can I do to strengthen my application? Study Honours at MQ or at another university. Honours gives you the greatest flexibility, but a different APAC 4th year accredited program will provide entry pathway to some Masters programs. Cultivate two good referees (ideally an academic and work referee) Value your work experience and make sure you understand how it relates to a better understanding of the world of work or relevance to the area of Psychology you are most interested in. In your application make sure you detail the type of work you did and how it relates to your target area, the population you worked with and the amount of work you did (length of time, hours per week) At a selection event speak about why you want to be become a Psychologist and what makes you competitive. In your motivation statement it’s important to link your preferred area of training to your own strengths and abilities. Have examples front of mind using the format Situation/Task, Action, Result format (consider reviewing information on interviews with MQ Careers) 30 What type of work experience might I find? Think about the competencies and areas of endorsement. What’s relevant? Any work that shows application of skills learned in UG and related to your target area. Examples can include: Undertake training with Lifeline to increase your counselling skills Clinical work including counselling or interviewing, ABA therapy, or working as a support therapist Working with vulnerable populations in the community to provide counselling, advocacy, support or education Working with clients in your area of interest (e.g., neurological conditions for Neuro) Research assistant work administering standardised assessments, interviewing or working with clients Consider internships, many large corporate and government organisations offer internships https://students.mq.edu.au/careers/looking/internships Investigate well-being related roles in the Defence Forces Defence Jobs Australia - The Reserves Look for roles with recruitment agencies to help with shortlisting, psychometric testing and interviews (e.g. Hudson, Chander Macleod, etc.) Work in customer service to learn more about communication skills, key performance indicators, OHS and performance management Work with market research organisations to conduct surveys or help out with focus groups (look for market research intern roles) 31 What if I don’t get into Honours at MQ?
