Trucking Security Measures The ATA Transportation Security Council (TSC) continues to gain consensus on recommended practices for trucking and supply chain security. For example, some of the steps a driver can take to en- hance the security of their truck and cargo when stopping for a break are: 1. Park near lights; 2. Park where the vehicle can be observed: 3. If possible, park so that the trailer doors are backed up closely to a wall or other structure, making it difficult for a thiefto enter the trailer and unload the cargo; 4. Turn off the engine; Lock the vehicle; 7a 6. Take the keys, as well as identifying information about the tractor and trailer; 7. Look for people loitering around the vehicle; and 8. Do not discuss loads over the CB radio or with any unautho- rized person. Protecting information is also important and drivers are encouraged to protect their credit cards, gas cards, laptops, and smartphones from cyber thieves. The ATA TSC also continues to strengthen its relationships with law enforcement to enhance cargo theft prevention and recovery throughout the country. Trucking had a significant victory in 2007 when a national Uniform Crime Code was added for cargo theft and the ULS. Sentencing Commission set minimum penalties for cargo theft offenses tried in federal courts.
