Left turms: Turning left also has its challenges. ‘Ihe defensive driver knows their truck's turning capabilities and radius (and how the setting of the adjustable rear axle may impact that), and how long tt will take to complete the turn. Because a left turn generally involves crossing lanes of traffic, it is important for the driver to signal their intention to turn well in advance, gauge the speed of oncoming trafic, and check the mirrors often — before, during, and after the turn. The defensive driver must allow enough time to complete the turn without creating a hazard. When attempting any turn, never assume that other drivers will see you. [hey may be looking elsewhere. Additionally, while all trailers are equipped with reflective strips, some trailers are still difficult to see at night and an opposing driver may think you have cleared the intersection when, tn fact, the trailer has not. Again, asa general rule, “give the right of way, don't take it.” Negotiating Curves: The defensive driver anticipates conditions that might contribute to a skid and rollover. For example, how a trailer is loaded and with what type of cargo can affect the likelihood of a skid or rollover. Is the cargo secure from shifting en route? Is the cargo loaded in such a way that it may make the trailer “top heavy’? Is the road uneven? Are there strong winds expected or possible en route? Typically, during a tractor-trailer rollover event, the trailer begins to roll first, often giving the driver little or no time to react. Because of this, understanding the characteristics of the load, the road condi- tions, and the weather is imperative. The speed of a CMV when entering a curve is the most important factor in rollovers. While most curves are posted with advisory speed limits, unless otherwise marked, these speeds are recommenda- tions based on passenger cars. Always slow down when entering curves and avoid driving on the shoulders as the wheels may sink, increasing the likelihood of rollover. The cargo securement standard for vehicles with a gross weight rating over 10,000 Ibs. requires that cargo must be secured to withstand a force in a left and right direction of 0.5 ¢ (50% of the weight of the cargo). Why? Because shifting freight can cause a vehicle to roll over. A tandem-axle semi-trailer with a cargo weight of 50,000 Ibs and cargo height of 102 in. (with load centered) will have a roll 46
