In addition, the following information ts required by the U.S. DOT to be on the shipping paper in this order to help identify HM loads: 1. ‘The identification number prescribed for the HM including the prefix UN or NA (North America), as specified 2. The proper shipping name of the commodity as specified in the Table of Hazardous Materials 3. The numerical class of the HM such as (3) for “Flammable Liquid,” (8) for “Corrosive Material,” and (5.1) for “Oxidiz- er, etc. 4. ‘The packing group of the HM, shown in Roman numerals, such as PGI, PGI, and PGIII 5. The shipper's certification indicating that the shipment ts in compliance with the Hazardous Materials Regulations What are the general duties of a driver when handling a hazardous material shipment? There are detailed Hazardous Materials Regulations and company rules that the driver should be familiar with so the driver can: 1. Check the shipping paper to be sure it is properly prepared 2. Check the labels on the container to see that they agree with the class(es) shown on the shipping paper 3. Check each package or container for leaking or other visible damage 4. Not load the HM if it is incompatible with other HM shipments or with food stuffs already on the vehicle 5. Ensure that the packages are properly blocked and braced to prevent shifting and relative motion between packages under conditions normally incident to transportation 6.
