Conflict may be defined as a disagreement between people with opposing needs, ideas, beliefs, values & goals. Conflict is not a strange thing for people. Human beings experience it in their day-to- day lives – with their friends, families & their professional lives. In the workplace, conflict causes a massive degree of frustration, pain, discomfort, sadness, as well as anger. 15 16 What is peer conflict? Peer conflict refers to mutual disagreement or hostility between peers or peer groups. It is characterized as conflict between people of equal or similar power (friends); it occurs occasionally; it is unplanned; and it does not involve violence or result in serious harm. 17 18 Conflict stages 1. Intrapersonal: conflict within the individual (eg, a person who cannot make decisions). I 2. Interpersonal: conflict among two or more individuals (eg, an argument between a boyfriend & girlfriend @ between a student & her/his teacher@ child & parent@ between friends/colleagues). 3. Intragroup: conflict within a group (eg, between members of the same work or football team). 4. Intergroup: conflict between two or more groups (eg, between two different youth gangs@between students & the school faculty). 20 Causes of peer conflict , There is a perceived breach of faith and trust between individual. When faith and trust on another is broken, it can create conflict. Unresolved disagreement that has escalated to an emotional level. Disagreement are normal. When there are left unresolved, however the associated feelings and emotion will remain in force at least at some level. Jealousy Jealousy based on envy of another person’s possessions. 21 Causes of peer conflict Miscommunication leading to unclear expectation. * The words we use to communicate don’t always clearly state the picture in our mind. When this occur errors often lead to frustration. The errors sometimes result to conflict. Ego problem Ego wants us to be “right” and moves us in defending our position, something unreasonably. 22 HOW WOULD I KNOW WHEN PEER CONFLICT HAS TURNED INTO AGGRESSION? Below are warning signs that a child or adolescent may be experiencing aggressive behaviours as a result of conflict with peers: Has bruises, physical cuts, or other injuries; Seems afraid to go to school or to the program; Has trouble sleeping; Appears anxious, nervous, or distracted 23 Ways to overcome peer conflict To prevent peer conflict and facilitate the development of peer support systems, create age-based programs that teach social skills. For elementary school-age children, social skills include building friendships, being supportive, emotion regulation, & social problem-solving skills. For older adolescents in middle school and high school, learning conflict resolution techniques and practicing respectful and positive interactions with others are important. Try to understand peer’s point of view, motivation & reaction to the conflict. Look for the points for mutual agreement. Express emotion in a way that is helpful to resolving the conflict.
