Before the Music of the 20th Century Virtuoso Dexterity Musical Genius The Music of the 20th Century The start of the 20th century saw the rise of distinct musical styles that reflected a move away from the conventions of earlier Western classical music. Unlocking Difficulties: Whole-Tone Scale It is the arrangement of pitches in the scale which are separated by a whole step. Unlocking Difficulties: Atonal It is the absence of functional harmony as a primary structural element. IMPRESSIONISM Started and developed in France in the 19th century. Makes use of sound that let listeners feel the moods that focus on the structure of music. Unresolved dissonance IMPRESSIONISM Uses the whole-tone scale In terms of imagery, impressionistic forms were translucent and hazy, as if trying to see a rain-drenched window. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) Achilles-Claude Debussy was born in France on August 22, 1862. At age 10, he entered the Paris Conservatoire. A winner of 1884 Prix de Rome with his composition, L’enfant prodigue. Claude Debussy (1862-1918) He turned away from the classical style of music by using whole-tone scale. Died on March 25, 1918 due to rectal cancer. Some of his great compositions were Engulfed Cathedral and Claire De Lune. Claire De Lune (1905), Claude Debussy Claire De Lune is a French word for Moonlight Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Joseph-Maurice Ravel was on March 7, 1875 in Ciboure, France. He was influenced by his mother with his love for music – Spanish folk melodies. In 1882, he took his first piano lesson and was observed to be “intelligent.” Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) Died on December 28, 1937. Some of his great compositions were Bolero, La valse, Ma mère l’oie, and Miroirs. Bolero (1928), Maurice Ravel Bolero was a commissioned work for a ballet dance performed in Paris Opera in 1928. IMPRESSIONISM A modernist movement that started in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. It expresses meaning/ emotional experience rather than physical reality. It signifies the artist’s character and inner insight. IMPRESSIONISM In art, it is always distorted, uses intense colors, and with strong and bold lines. It applies atonality and dissonance. Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) American composer born in Austria on September 13, 1874. Known for his radical sound of music. He completely abandoned tonality. Died on July 13, 1951 Some of his great compositions were Pierrot Lunaire and Modestrunken. Pierrot Lunaire (1912), Arnold Schoenberg Applied the style sprechtimme – half sang, half spoken Review 1. IMPRESSIONISM EXPRESSIONISM Other Musical Styles Primitivism Neo-Classicism Avant-Garde music Modern Nationalism PRIMITIVISM It combines two familiar or simple ideas together creating new sounds. It uses materials from other culture to another indigenous materials from other countries. Igor Stravinsky – linked Expressionism to Primitivism, as he is a nationalistic composer from Russia and left for United States in 1939. One of his prominent works is The Rake’s Rhapsody (1951). Bela Bartok (1881-1945) – Born in Hungary on March 25, 1881, well- known Primitivistic composer. One of his prominent compositions is Duet for Pipes. NEO-CLASSICISM A partial return of the Classical style of music while combining tonal harmonies with slight dissonance. Sergie Prokofieff (1891-1953) – Born in Ukraine in 1891. His style is uniquely recognizable for its progressive technique, pulsating rhythms, melodic directness and resolving dissonance. One of his prominent works is Concerto in C Major. Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc (1899-1963) – His compositions had a coolly elegant modernity, tempered by classical sense of proportion. His Concerto for Solo Piano was written for Boston Symphony Orchestra. AVANT-GARDE It is closely associated with electronic music. Improvisation was a necessity in this style, for the musical scores were not necessarily followed as written. George Gershwin (1898-1937) – Considered as “Father of Jazz”. One of his prominent works is Porgy and Bess (1934). Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) – He was well-known for his works compositions for Broadways like the West Side Story (1957). Philip Glass (1937) - He explored composing music for ballet, opera, theater, film, and even TV jingles. Music in Fifths is one of his compositions. MODERN NATIONALISM It sought to combine modern techniques with folk materials. Modest Mussorgsky, Mili Balakirev, Alexander Borodin, Cesar Cui and Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov (known as Russian Five) – infused chromatic harmony and incorporated Russian folk music and liturgical chants in their thematic materials. The composer can be able to experiment that regular musical instruments cannot produce. Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse (1883-1965) Father of Electronic Music A French composer who spent most of his career and life in the USA. ORGANIZED SOUND – grouping of rhythms and timbres to define music itself. By adding one layer of sound to the polyphony to create a new sound. Chance Music Also called as aleatory music (Latin word: alea – dice) Style of music where different sounds, musical or non-musical, are assembled and combined to create any kind of musical composition based on chance. John Cage (1912-1992) Born in Los Angeles, California, USA on September 5, 1912. Became one of the most original composers in the history of Western music. He became famous for his composition Four Minutes and 33 Seconds (4’33’’) Electronic Music vs. Chance Music VS What is/ are their difference/s? Review 1.
