Develop and instill in the minds of our fellow Filipinos the value of education. In 1872, after the martyrdom of GOMBURZA. Jose went to the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, a college that was managed by the Jesuit in Manila. The Jesuits\' ideas and ideals of education attracted the sons of prominent Filipino families. He studied there for five years until he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with the highest honors that entitled him to enroll in any university. Don Francisco, who first wanted Rizal to study at Letran changed his mind and decided to send him to Ateneo instead. His supposed entrance to Ateneo Municipal (which became Ateneo de Manila later) was first rejected by Father Magin Fernando, the college registrar because Rizal was late for registration and was sickly and undersized for his age 11 years. However, his brother Paciano, a former aid of martyred Father Jose Burgos, pleaded to Manuel Xerex Burgos to intercede. At last Jose Rizal (his registered name at Ateneo) was admitted to the school but was assigned to sit at the last row of the class. Rizal boarded a house on Catholic Street which was owned by a spinster Titay. Rizal boarded her house to collect a part of the P300 debt of Titay. Students at the Ateneo were divided into two groups, the Roman Empire consisting of the internos (boarders) and the Carthaginians empire composed of the externos (non-boarders). The students wore a school uniform consisted of hemp-fabric trouser and striped cotton coat. Rizal's first professor at Ateneo was Father Jose Bech. At first, Rizal was an externo, a Carthaginians occupying the end of the line but after a month, he became the emperor, the brightest pupil in the class, and was awarded a religious picture as a prize- the first prize he ever won at the Ateneo. During his second term at Ateneo, he only placed second in rank because he resented some of the remarks of his professor- although all his grades were still marked "excellent'. Rizal returned to Calamba in March 1873 for summer vacation. But he did not enjoy the vacation because his mother was in prison. To cheer his sadness, Neneng (Saturnina), his sister brought him to Tanauan. At the end of the summer vacation in 1873, Rizal returned to Manila to enroll in a second-year term. This time he boarded inside Intramuros at No. 6, Magallanes street at the house owned by Doña Pepang an old widow. His schooling ended in 1877 when he graduated with the highest honors in all his subjects. After his graduation, Rizal who was then sixteen years old experienced his first romance - that painful experience which comes to nearly all adolescents". The girl was Segunda Katigbak, a pretty fourteen years old Batanguena from Lipa. But it was hopeless since the very beginning because Segunda was already engaged to be married to her townmate, Manuel Luz, Rizal, for all his artistic and intellectual prowess, was a shy and timid lover. Segunda had manifested, by insinuation and deeds. Her affection to him, but he timidly failed to purpose. Among his remarkable achievements at the Ateneo Municipal College de Manila were the following: 1. He produced two sculptural pieces carved in "*batikulin*". One was the figure of "our lady" and the other was the image of the "sacred heart". These works of art are still preserved aim in the Ateneo library. 2. The importance of education was the primary theme of his early poems while he was a student at the Ateneo municipal college de manila. These were "por la education recibe lustre la patria" (through education, the country receives light) and "Alianza intima entre la religion y la Buena education" (the intimate alliance between and good education). 3. His literary and academic excellence qualified him for membership in two prestigious societies at the Ateneo municipal college de manila; the academy of Spanish literature and the academy of natural sciences. These academies were exclusive societies, which welcomed as members-only Athenians who were gifted in literature and sciences. He later became prefect of the academy of Spanish. **REFERENCES** - Mariano M. Ariola (2013). Life, Works, and Writings of Dr. Jose P. TOMAS AND** **THE EDUCATION AT UNIVERSIDAD CENTRAL DE MADRID, SPAIN** **Introduction:** ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This module is the final lesson for the prelim period that discusses the education of Rizal at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), and the reason why Rizal left the Philippines for the first time. It will discuss also the women in the life of Rizal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Date and Time Allotment:** -- -- **Lesson Objectives:** At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to; 1. Comprehend on the years of his studies at the UST. 2. Promote the value of education during the years of his stay in school, 3. Discover the reason why Rizal left Spain and to know the itinerary of his travels to Spain, 4. Discover the sacrifices he encountered during his trip and stay in Spain, and 5. Identify and apply the values exhibited by Rizal during his stay in Spain to our present life. In April 1877, Rizal enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) for a degree in Philosophy and Letters. After completing the first year of that course, he shifted to a medical course upon the advice of his Ateneo Rector. He finally decided to take up medicine because of his desire to treat the failing eyesight of his mother. In that same school year (1877-1878), he also studied Surveying and Agriculture in Ateneo. He was more loyal to the Jesuit teachers who loved and encouraged him to pursue a higher level of knowledge. In 1880, he had his first experience of Spanish arrogance and brutality. He joined a literary contest sponsored by the Liceo Artistico Literario de Manila. His entry was the poem "*A la Juventud Filipina*" (To the Filipino Youth) and won the top prize of a feather-shaped silver pen with gold ribbon. The following year, the Liceo sponsored another contest celebrating the centenary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes. Rizal won the first prize again for his play "*El Consejo de Dioses*" (The Council of the Gods). His two-prize winning opuses had proven that a native could assert himself as superior to, if not, equal than the Spaniards in the field of literature. The pervading racial discrimination at the UST gave Rizal the theme of his one-act play, the "*Juanito al Pasig*" which he wrote during his time as President of the Academy of Spanish literature of Ateneo Municipal College de Manila. The drama satirized the friar in the person of Satan who tempted one of the characters with fabulous riches and powers. When the play was staged, the Jesuits gamely laughs at the satire, but some conservative were insulted. The academic climate at the UST was quite different from Ateneo Municipal College de Manila because most of the Dominican professors seemed hostile to him. The methods of instruction were traditional and, in some cases, repressive. Due to the unfriendly attitude of his professors, he failed to win his high scholastic honors. Although his grade in the first year of Philosophy course were all excellent, they were not impressive in the four years of medicine. Notwithstanding academic studies in UST and his extra-curricular activities in Ateneo, Rizal had ample time for love. His sad experience with his first love had made him wiser in the ways of romance. Shortly after losing Segunda Katigbak, he paid court to a young woman in Calamba. He called her simple, "Miss L", describing her as "fair with seductive and attractive eyes". After visiting her in her house several times, he suddenly stopped his wooing, and the romance died in natural death. Nobody knows who this woman was. Rizal himself did not give her name. Hence, her identity was lost to history. Rizal\'s next romance was with another Leonor- Leonor Rivera- his cousin from Camiling, Tarlac. She was the pretty daughter of his landlord-uncle and a student at La Concordia College where his youngest sister, Soledad, was then studying. Leonor, born in Camiling, Tarlac on April 11, 1967, was a frail, pretty girl "tender as a budding flower with kindly, wistful eyes". They became engaged. In her letters to Rizal, Leonor signed her name as "Taimis" to camouflage their intimate relationship from their parents and friends. After five years at the UST, he decided to quit and he continued his medical education in Spain. **The women in Rizal's life:** 1. **Segunda Katigbak-** Rizal's first teenage crush - From Lipa city, Batangas - Also known as PAISANA, but Rizal referred her in his diary as "K". - A gay, talkative, witty, virginal, and beguiling woman. - Their romance died because Jose Rizal found out that Segunda was engaged to be married, Manuel Luz. 2. **Margarita Almeda Gomez** also is known as MISS L - The second love of Rizal - Form Pakil, Laguna - With fair complexion, seductive, and attractive eyes. - Their romance died for 2 reasons. 1. The possible help the Masons could extend as a protective shield to use in his fight against evil forces of tyranny and exploitation. He became a Master of Mason in Lodge Solidaridad and from then on, he ceased going to church regularly. Rizal and other Filipino students together with other foreign students participated in the bloody riots that erupted at Central University. The issue at hand was Dr. Miguel Morayta's proclamation of "freedom of science and the teacher" during the opening ceremonies of the academic year in 1884. The reactionary catholic bishops of Spain condemned this liberal view and Dr. Morayta as excommunicated. This angered the students and violent riots started. The university rector who sided with the students was forced to resign. In June 1884, he was awarded the degree of Licentiate in medicine. The next academic year. He passed all subjects leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
