Warm Up Please complete the warm up on the peardeck, a document or on paper 1. How is pressure inside the chest and lungs changed when you breathe in? 2. How is the pressure inside the chest and lungs changed when you breathe out? Check-In Feel free to explain. :) Unit 1 - Respiration Lesson 5 - Respiration Learning Objectives 1. Explain that respiration is a chemical reaction that releases useful energy from glucose in a controlled way 2. Write the word equation for respiration 3. State that respiration happens inside every living cell 4. State aerobic respiration uses oxygen and happens inside mitochondria. 5. Explain the difference between breathing and respiration. Key Words Glucose mitochondria Energy - Energy comes from food. - Carbs (Carbohydrates) are broken down into glucose by our digestive system. - Glucose goes into blood which then is delivered to every cell in the body. Releasing Energy from Glucose - Energy must be changed. - Glucose is an energy storage, our bodies need to unlock it. - Mitochondria inside cells unlock this energy for us to use. - Uses chemical reactions called aerobic respiration. (uses oxygen) Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water - This reaction is controlled, not all the energy is released at once With a partner….try to answer the following: 1. Neurons (nerve cells) contain more mitochondria than cheek cells. Suggest why. With a partner….try to answer the following: Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water 2. What are the reactants and what are the products of this reaction? With a partner….try to answer the following: Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water 3. Explain why the air that you breathe out contains more carbon dioxide than the air you breathe in. Respiration and heat production - When respiration happens, some heat is also produced. - Respiring cells get warmer than surrounding because of this. End of Class Today you learned to… 1. Explain that respiration is a Remember to upload your chemical reaction that releases assignment to google classroom useful energy from glucose in a (photos)! controlled way 2. Write the word equation for respiration 3. State that respiration happens inside every living cell 4. State aerobic respiration uses oxygen and happens inside mitochondria. 5. Explain the difference between breathing and respiration. Practice Complete workbook pages 14-15 Have your teacher check your work as you complete pages. We will go over the answers for these pages towards the end of class. Mini-Project Breathing and respiration Breathing and respiration are two completely different but interrelated body processes that assist body organs to function properly. Breathing is the physical process of exchanging gases whilst Respiration is a chemical process that takes place at a cellular level and produces energy
