What is Art? It is a form of creative activity such as painting, music, literature, and dance. Contemporary Arts(1960-now) Contemporary Art is the art that springs out of the present-day events and passions of the society. It is the newest form of art, amusing people from the late 1960’s or early around 1970’s up to very minute. This art functions in a global society that is culturally diverse and technology-oriented. A period where the movement of social realism developed. Modern Art(1860-1960) Encompasses the diverse style and radical innovations during this period. VISUAL ART Visual art can be defined as a form of art that uses any medium to represent the artist’s idea, emotion and imagination. Drawing is a representation of any form or object by hand through the medium of pencil, pen, charcoal, etc. Painting is the process or art of using paint, in a picture, as a protective coating or as decoration. Sculpture can be defined as a three-dimensional art form that uses materials like clay, stone or wood for its execution. Calligraphy is the art of writing letters in a manner that looks visually appealing. Photography is the art of producing an image of an object on a photographic film. APPLIED ART Applied art is a form of art that can be defined as art that has practical application as well as functionality. Architecture is the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. Fashion design is the art of designing apparel that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. Fashion design involves working with different types of fabrics and patterns which are then designed into garments. Pottery is one of the oldest and most widespread of the decorative arts where objects made are commonly useful ones, such as vessels for holding liquids or plates or bowls from which food can be served. Jewelry design is also a different form of art and it involves the design of intricate pieces of jewelry from metals, wood, or plastic. Interior Design is the art of planning the design, layout and style of an architectural space, be it home or office. PERFORMING ART Forms of creative activity that are performed in front of an audience, such as drama, music, and dance. Of all the different forms of art, it is much appreciated and enjoyed by people. Dance is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. Music is a form of art that combines vocal or instrumental sounds to create a composition. Theater & Film is a form of performing art in theater and films. Both theater and films use stories that capture the imagination of people. It is also a good form of entertainment. Literature is the art-form of language, and words are its tools. PRACTICAL (UTILITARIAN) ART. This art is intended for practical use or utility. It is the changing of raw materials for utilitarian purposes. However, they must possess ornaments or artistic qualities to make them useful and beautiful. INDUSTRIAL ARTS. It is the changing of raw materials into some significant products for humans, examples are shell craft, bamboo crafts, leather craft, pottery making, sheet - metal work and manufacture of automobiles, home appliances and televisions sets. APPLIED/ HOUSEHOLD ART. It refers mostly to household arts such as flower arrangement, interior decoration, dress making, home - making, embroidery, cooking and others. CIVIC ART. This art includes city or town planning, maintenance, and beautification of parks. This refers to beautification to improve the standards of living. COMMERCIAL ART. It involves business propaganda in the form of advertisements in newspapers and magazines, sign painting, billboard and announcements, leaflets, displays, poster designing, movie illustrations and many more. GRAPHIC ART. It is anything printed from raised or sunken reliefs and plane surfaces. AGRICULTURE ART. (crop production), horticulture (garden or orchard cultivation), husbandry (raising of cows, carabaos, poultry and swine) and farming. BUSINESS ART. This includes merchandising, accounting, bookkeeping, typewriting, stenography, salesmanship, and business administration. FISHERY ART- It includes shallow and deep- sea fishing refrigeration and culture, net weaving. Poetry refers to expressing a feeling or idea with the use of figurative or symbolic language. Prose is a literature that is not poetry with two categories: informative and persuasive, just like an essay. Spanish Colonial Tradition Metrical romance. This focuses on chivalric, folkloric, legendary, and religious themes. Pasyon. This is written in a stanza with 5 lines with 8 syllables per line which recounts the life of Jesus Christ. This is useful as a source of images, stories of Jesus Christ. Forms of Contemporary Prose in the Philippines: Folk narrative. Any story based on real or fictional events in the past told among the people in a community. Myth. This is a story that explains the origin of the world and its first inhabitants. Legend. Heroic and historical legend tackles episodes in the lives of great men and women. Religious legend narrates the display of miracles of God and of the saints. Supernatural legend focuses on the existence of beings from the underworld. Toponymical legend explains why a certain place has this name. Forms of Contemporary Prose in the Philippines: Folktales. These are classified into animal tales or fables, magic tales, humorous tales, novelistic tales, religious and didactic tales. Essay. This explains the insights or information using description, narration, and humor. Novel. This is defined as the lengthy and complex narrative of events based on the author's imagination. Short story. This is a concise secular narrative with romantic, realistic and radical tradition. Komiks. This is a special form of contemporary literature which involves drawing frames showing a set of characters with their actions and usually contains balloons enclosed with words or dialogue. MUSIC Elements of Music: Melody. This is a succession of consecutive notes or tones changing in pitch and duration. Rhythm. It has three qualities: tempo which describes how fast or slow is the music; meter which refers to the unit of time that is made up of beats or pulses; and rhythmic pattern. Harmony. This is a combination of different tones or pitches played sung together at the same time. Texture. This is the relationship of melodic and harmonic lines in music. Dynamics. This is the degree of softness and loudness of music. Timbre. Also known as tone color which is the quality of sound generated by the instrument or voice. Form. This refers to how the elements of music are organized. National Artists of the Philippines: A Brief Overview The National Artists of the Philippines is an esteemed title given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country's arts and culture. This recognition honors those whose work has had a profound impact on the artistic and cultural heritage of the Philippines. Here's a concise overview of the National Artists across various fields: Architecture Juan Nakpil (1973): Recognized for his groundbreaking work in modern Philippine architecture, Nakpil is celebrated for designing the Quiapo Church's bell tower and numerous other significant structures. Pablo Antonio (1976): A pioneer of modern architecture in the Philippines, Antonio is known for his innovative use of space and form, including the iconic Manila Hilton. Leandro Locsin (1990): An influential architect who integrated traditional Filipino aesthetics with modern design, known for the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Philippine International Convention Center. Ildefonso P. Santos Jr. (2006): Renowned for his contributions to landscape architecture, including the design of numerous parks and public spaces. José María Zaragoza (2014): Celebrated for his role in the development of modernist architecture in the Philippines, including notable church designs. Francisco Mañosa (2018): Known for his expertise in Filipino-inspired architecture, including the groundbreaking use of indigenous materials and design elements.
