SIGNS OF THE TIMES Grade 12 UNIT I Marriage and Family Life LESSON 1.2 Marriage and Jesus Values Objectives Doctrine: To explain the origin of the Catholic teachings on marriage Morals: To describe divorce contradicting the meaning and purpose of marriage Worship: To familiarize themselves with the commitment in marriage through the marriage vow Key Questions What did Jesus imply by reaffirming the Genesis mandate on marriage? How does the mandate in Genesis safeguard marriage? Activity: Let’s make a paper boat! Instructions: 1. Prepare a sheet of paper (1/2 crosswise) 2. Fold the paper in half from top to bottom. 3. Unfold the paper and fold it in half vertically. 4. Fold down the top corners while leaving some space at the bottom. 5. Fold the bottom of the paper up against both sides. 6. Fold the bottom corners in. 7. Make the triangle into a square. 8. Fold up the bottom flaps. 9. Make the triangle into a square again. 10. Pull out the triangles on the side of the square. 11. Make your paper boat stand. 1. How many students were able to follow the model? 2. How many students read the instructions well before starting to make the paper boat? 3. How many students did not mind the instructions but relied on their own skills? 4. For those who were not able to imitate the model, what problems did they encounter that resulted in them not following the model? 5. Why are instructions important? 6. How is this activity related to marriage? Matthew 19:1-6 When Jesus finished these words, he left Galilee and went to the district of Judea across the Jordan. Great crowds followed him, and he cured them there. Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?” He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” Jesus Affirms the Institution of Marriage When Jesus was approached by the Pharisees to test him by asking about the indissolubility of marriage, he referred to what was being taught from the Genesis. “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So they are no longer two but one flesh…” Besides quoting from the Genesis, Jesus also added a command on marriage. “Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” The increasing number of married couples contemplating divorce manifests the weakening of the nuptial bond. Why? Perhaps it is because of the clamor of loose morality in the environment and the confusion over the mutual rights and duties of the spouses. So what must married couples do to ward off temptations of separating, stay true to the bonds of marriage, and work hard instead to strengthen their marriage. In a similar way that Jesus answered by recalling what was taught from the beginning, they, too, must recall the vows exchanged during the wedding day, when they promised to be faithful to each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health” until death do them part. So, when a couple faces the “worse,” “poorer,” or “sickness,” or the brink of destruction, they should recall the moral lesson of our activity: OBEY what is stated in the Genesis mandate. So what must married couples do to ward off temptations of separating, stay true to the bonds of marriage, and work hard instead to strengthen their marriage? They should also ask for help from the Church’s ministries on marriage and family. But most of all, they should never forget to pray to God for he is “(Our) stronghold, (our) refuge, (our) God in whom (we) trust!” (Psalm 91). 1. Why did the Pharisees ask Jesus regarding his stand on divorce? 2. Was the level of the Pharisees’ question civil or spiritual? Why? 3. How did Jesus affirm the Genesis mandate on marriage? 4. What did Jesus establish when he commanded, “What God has joined together let no man separate”? 5. Why are there many Christian marriages ending up in separation nowadays? 6. How can the Church offer mercy and compassion to the families which are at the point of breaking up? A. Marriage Vow Read and analyze the marriage vow. Choose a married couple and interview them.
