HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: FIRE SCENE OPERATIONS – 011 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Use of Elevator with Fire Service Option Revision: 1 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE Fire Service Option is used in an elevator to lock out the hall call buttons so that firefighters or other authorized personnel can control the elevator from inside the car. POLICY PROCEDURE An elevator featuring Fire Service Option is recalled either automatically upon actuation of a smoke detector or fire alarm pull station, or by operating the key-actuated switch, usually located on the wall adjacent to the elevator at the lobby level. When the service is actuated, the elevator will return to the lobby non-stop. Firefighters should take the following precautions when operating an elevator with Fire Service Option: A. If the elevator returns automatically, place the lobby control switch in the "ON" position to restore the elevator to fire-fighter use. B. Remove the key and place it in the key-actuated switch located inside the car and turn it to the "on" position. The elevator is now under total control from inside the car. C. Depress the desired floor button located on the car's operating panel. D. Depress and hold the door "close" button until the door is fully closed. 1 E. After the elevator reaches the desired floor, depress and hold the door "open" switch until the door is fully opened. F. Once the door is open, the elevator will remain at the floor until another floor is selected and the guideline is repeated or until the key-actuated switch is returned to the "off" position. An elevator with this feature should be checked to verify that it is operating correctly. Most likely, firefighters will encounter differences or variations, depending on when the feature was added and local code requirements. Conduct an elevator survey to determine this. Fire Service Option keys are carried on all fire apparatus and all staff vehicles. "Chicago" style elevator lock box keys are also provided to allow for access into elevator lock boxes that are found in some highrise buildings. DEFINITIONS EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES End of Document 2
