Also to give direction for the daily checkout of the G1 MSA SCBA 1055.09.02 Overview/Definitions/SCBA Uses This SOG identifies the MSA G1 pressure-demand self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) operating independent of the ambient air for use in atmospheres immediately dangerous to life or health. Breathable air is supplied to the user from a compressed air cylinder via a pressure reducer, a regulator and a face piece. The exhalation air is released directly into the ambient atmosphere. Definitions: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): “G-1” -HUD: Heads Up Display (face piece component) -Speaker Amplifier: voice amplification device (face piece component) Hazardous Atmosphere (IDLH): Any atmosphere deficient in oxygen, or containing contaminants, or otherwise not conducive to life. Quick Fill URC System: (Universal Rescue Connection) SCBA Use: Personnel shall use SCBAs in conjunction with appropriate PPE when working in or entering a Confined Space or an area where any of the following exist:  The atmosphere is IDLH  The atmosphere is suspected of being IDLH  The atmosphere may rapidly become IDLH Personnel must ensure that all functions of their SCBA are operable at the beginning of their shift and prior to entering any IDLH atmosphere. Situations warranting the use of SCBAs mandate a two-person evolution, and shall include:  Communications – Communications (voice, visual, signal line, etc.) shall be maintained between all individuals entering or working in the IDLH atmosphere.  Stand-By Personnel – (See “Two-In / Two-Out” Policy) Page 2 of 7 1055.09.03 Visual Inspections All Components (1) Inspect all components for deterioration, dirt, cracks, debris, tears, holes, stickiness, signs of heat or chemical related damage or other visible signs of damage. (2) Inspect all straps (shoulder pads, pull straps, lumbar pad, waist straps, face piece head harness) for tears, cuts, wear, abrasion, missing buckles or straps. (3) Perform all component specific inspections listed below. Face Piece (1) Inspect the lens for cracks, scratches, deformation, and color change. (2) Check the face piece rubber for a tight seal and secure fit to the lens ring. (3) Ensure the exhalation valve is clean and operates easily. The valve must move off the seat and return when released (from inside the face piece). (4) Inspect the face piece inlet for damage. Ensure the inhalation valve is in place. (5) Inspect the nose cup to ensure the check valve are in place and the nose cup is secure to the component housing. Regulator (1) Ensure that moisture or debris is not present, especially inside the regulator and in the microphone ports. (2) Ensure the o-ring and seal ring are free of debris and not damaged or missing. (3) If the SCBA is equipped with a quick connect hose, inspect the rubber seal for deterioration, dirt, cracks, tears, or tackiness. a) Inspect the quick connect fittings. b) Ensure that the openings are clear and free of debris and other contaminants. c) Ensure that the quick connect fittings operate properly and are secured. Page 3 of 7 Pressure Reducer (1) Turn the quick connect counterclockwise a quarter of a turn and pull away from cylinder valve to release. a) Before installing ensure there is no dirt or debris on either the male or female end of the coupling. b) Ensure the adapter on the cylinder valve is tight if not remove from service. (2) Inspect the high pressure relief valve for damage. a) Ensure the relief valve is not damaged and that the relief valve ports are not showing. b) If damaged, remove the SCBA from service. (3) Push the quick connect coupling onto the cylinder valve adapter until an audible snap is heard. The handgrip will rapidly rotate approx. 45° counter clockwise indicating that the valve is connected to the pressure regulator. Cylinder and Valve Assembly (1) Check the hydrostatic test date on the cylinder approval sticker located on the cylinder neck. Carbon-wrapped cylinders must be tested every five years. (2) Ensure the needle and gauge face on the cylinder valve gauge are clearly visible and that the gauge stem is not bent. (3) Ensure the rubber boot is present on the cylinder valve. If the boot is missing, remove from service. (4) For a remote connect cylinder, ensure the dove tail feature is not damaged or cracked. If damaged, remove from service Carrier Assembly (1) Operate the latch on the cylinder band to ensure that it opens and closes properly and that it holds the cylinder securely. (2) Ensure that the lumbar pad is attached securely. (3) Ensure the power module and pressure reducer are secured to the back plate by the lower cover. (4) For remote connect cylinders, ensure the dove tail feature on the lower cover is not damaged or broken Page 4 of 7 1055.09.04 Functional Tests 1) 2) 3) 4) Check that the Regulator and Face piece Can Hold a Negative Pressure Close the cylinder valve and purge any air from the system using the bypass knob Hold the face piece against the face to create an effective seal. Attach regulator to the face piece and inhale until the face piece begins to collapse against the face. 5) Hold breath for approximately 10 seconds. a) Negative pressure should be maintained and the face piece should remain collapsed against the face for the entire 10 seconds. 6) Do not use the SCBA if negative pressure cannot be maintained in the face piece. 7) Check Function of Regulator 8) (Push the release buttons on the side of the regulator to ensure the regulator is shut off. 9) If the regulator is equipped with a bypass valve, ensure that the bypass knob is fully closed (clockwise). 10) Open the cylinder valve and ensure the valve is completely open. 11) Observe the LED display. a) The LEDs must illuminate in a sequenced pattern. 12) After the sequence is completed, the corresponding system pressure will be displayed. 13) Open the bypass knob (counterclockwise). a) Ensure that air flows from the regulator. 14) Close the bypass knob (clockwise). 15) Attach the regulator to the face piece. 16) Ensure proper attachment by pulling on the regulator. 17) Don the face piece or hold the face piece against the face to create an effective seal. 18) Inhale sharply to start air flow. 19) Breathe normally. 20) Ensure proper regulator response. 21) The regulator should NOT make any unusual sounds including whistling, chattering, or popping 22) Remove the face piece from the face. 23) Ensure that air flows freely. 24) Push the regulator release buttons. 25) Ensure that air flow stops. Page 5 of 7 1055.09.05 Control Module (1) When testing the control module, lay the control module down flat to check the white light illuminating the pressure gauge and to check if the graphical display and the analog gauge are consistent within a 5% range (225/4500 psi) with the cylinder pressure. (2) Both reset buttons on the control module have the same function. Use one when resetting the motion alarm and the other when testing the manual alarm. (3) Verify proper function of the HUD, control module, power module, and low pressure warning device by observing the control module gauge and display when the alarms sound. Perform this test with a full cylinder. NOTE: If the battery indicator on the gauge is at half or below change the battery. 1055.09.06 Heads Up Display The G1 HUD provides the pressure and alarm status to the user through light pipes into the facepiece. The pressure status is on the right side of the user, while the alarm status is on the left side of the user. The pressure status indicators are divided into four segments. These four segments are based on percentage of the maximum pressure of the cylinder. Each segment has a corresponding quantity and color of LEDs associated with them. Below are the segments the G1 HUD: Segment 1 (75 to 100 %) Four (4) green LEDs Segment 2 (50 to 74 %) Three (3) green LEDs Segment 3 (36 to 49 %) Two (2) yellow LEDs Segment 4 (00 to 35 %) One (1) red LED 1055.09.07 Motorola Pairing 1) 2) 3) 4) A display will be on the front and top of the device. Power on the G1 SCBA. Power on the Motorola Radio using the volume knob. Verify that the Bluetooth icon is visible on the Motorola display. If the icon is not visible, the radio is either not configured correctly or Bluetooth is disabled and the radio is not ready for Bluetooth pairing. 5) Access the RFID tag reader on the G1 SCBA by pressing and holding both of the 2 GREEN control module buttons until the RFID icon displays on the control module. 6) Place the RFID pairing tag for the specific radio over the RFID target on the G1 power module. 7) Once the RFID tag has been read by the G1 SCBA, a pairing request will be visible on the front display of the Motorola within 30 seconds. Accept the pairing request using the Motorola menu button; the radio will give an audible indication once the pairing is complete. Page 6 of 7 1055.09.08 Battery Removal/Installation NOTE: If the battery indicator on the gauge is at half or below change the battery. (1) The battery module is installed on the user side of the SCBA in the middle of the back plate. (2) Unlock the Li-ion battery module with the battery removal tool (Male Part of Belt). (3) Push the removal tool into the slot in the Li-ion battery module and click into place. (4) Pull the removal tool and the Li-ion battery module out of the power module. (5) Make sure before inserting the battery pack that the power module is clean and that no pins or grooves are damaged. (6) Insert the Li-ion battery pack into the power module, ensure to align it with the grooves in the power module. (7) Release the battery module and push in its top. (8) The battery module will click into place. (9) To make sure that the battery pack fits securely, push on the opposite side of the power module, the battery pack should not move.
