Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District Standard Operating Guidelines 1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1. # 1033.08.00 Subject: EMS Equipment and Medication Inventory Control Adopted: May 7, 2008 Effective Date: May 21, 2008 Last Revised Date: November 2023 Revision Number: 3 Due for Revision Date: November 2026 Table of Contents 1033.08.00 1033.08.01 1033.08.02 1033.08.03 1033.08.04 1033.08.05 1033.08.06 1033.08.07 1033.08.08 Introduction Purpose Scope Purchasing Storage Inventory Daily Medication Check Expired/Damaged Medications and IV Fluids Medication and IV Fluid Usage C:\powerdms\convert\Temp\28ca0e16-d8eb-44aa-acce-6c7e47591b1b.doc Page 1 of 3 1033.08.00 Introduction The following is the Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District’s policy on handling, storage, inventory, and security of its EMS equipment and medications. 1033.08.01 Purpose The purpose of this document is to outline the procedures for medication, fluid, and equipment storage and inventory at all locations. 1033.08.02 Scope This SOP will provide the process to accurately record supply usage, maintain the quality of EMS equipment/medications, and facilitate the ordering and distribution process. 1033.08.03 Purchasing The EMS Deputy Chief will procure all equipment, medications, and IV fluids as directed by the Medical Director. 1033.08.04 Storage Each of the stations will have a designated medical supply storage room/cabinet in a climatecontrolled area. Bonita Station 24 will be the main supply location. 1033.08.05 Inventory The EMS Deputy Chief is responsible for maintaining the inventory located in the main supply room and at each station. If an apparatus’ inventory falls below minimum and it is not in the station medical supply room: The station Lieutenant should notify the BC. BC then sends info to the EMS Deputy Chief and Logistics Coordinator. After hours: BC can access and remove inventory from master supply if necessary, and then email items taken to the EMS Deputy Chief or Logistics Coordinator. On the second Monday of each month, an expiration report on each apparatus will be sent to the shift BC, FTOs and EMS Deputy Chief. The expiration report will include the quantity of all EMS supplies that will expire at the end of the current month and the beginning of the upcoming month. There may be additional items that need to be checked, counted, and reported. An email listing these items will also be sent to all personnel on the second Monday, if necessary. All upcoming expiring EMS supplies will be replaced on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of each month with inventory from the medical supply rooms at each station. C:\powerdms\convert\Temp\28ca0e16-d8eb-44aa-acce-6c7e47591b1b.doc Page 2 of 3 1033.08.06 Daily Medication Checks Each day the crew of every ALS licensed unit and Marine 27 will check its medical supplies, medications and IV fluids for proper integrity and expiration dates. The liquids shall be clear and free of discoloration, particles and cloudiness where applicable. When supplies fall below the required level, the paramedic responsible for the ALS unit shall ensure that the unit is restocked. Upon completion of the daily check, the EMS inventory portion in PSTrax shall be logged. The officer on the apparatus is to ensure that the EMS inventory is complete and logged in PSTrax. By logging the EMS inventory you are stating you have completed a thorough check including expiration dates of all items contained in the listed EMS inventory on the date indicated. 103308.07 Expired/Damaged Medications and IV Fluids When any medication is found to be unusable, it is to be removed from service and replaced. These items will be placed in the expiration bin at each station for pick up and proper disposal. 1033.808 Medication and IV Fluid Usage All privileged paramedics with this agency may use any medication or IV fluid as outlined in the Lee County Common Treatment Guidelines or by Medical Direction. Any and all deviations from the above must be approved by either the Medical Director or EMS Deputy Chief. Upon finding any problems or discrepancies with regard to the above listed policies and procedures, the EMS Deputy Chief is to be notified immediately to investigate the situation.
