THE PURPOSES OF Dr. Romel C. Mutya ǀ Instructor EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH CTU-Danao Campus What is Research? an organized inquiry carried out to provide information for solving problems the cornerstone of every science a process in looking at solution of a give problem which can be used as basis for: Policy formulation Policy enhancement or improvement What is Research? a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among natural phenomenon (Kerlinger, 1976) from a French word “CERCHIER” meaning to “to seek or to search” Why conduct research? Students, professors, researchers, research centers, government, practitioners, newspaper people, TV networks, market research firms, schools, hospitals, social service, political parties, consulting firms, HR departments, public interest organizations, insurance, law firms conduct research as part of their jobs, to be better informed, less biased decisions, in contrast to guessing, hunches, intuition, and other personal experience. Therefore, RESEARCH concerns with WHAT (facts and conclusions) and HOW (scientific, critical components). RESEARCH is a iterative process that eventually seeks to explain or solve an identified problem. PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 1.IMPROVE PRACTICE: Educational research aims to enhance teaching methods and learning strategies by providing evidence-based recommendations that practitioners can implement in their classrooms. PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 2. ADD TO KNOWLEDGE: It contributes to the existing body of knowledge about educational processes, learning theories, and student behavior, helping educators understand how to facilitate learning more effectively. PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 3. ADDRESS GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE: Research identifies and explores areas that are under-researched or poorly understood, such as the impact of different teaching modalities (e.g., online vs. traditional learning) on student outcomes PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 4. EXPAND KNOWLEDGE: Educational research allows for the exploration of new ideas and concepts, extending current understanding and challenging existing theories in education. PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 5. REPLICATE KNOWLEDGE: It provides a framework for verifying previous research findings, ensuring that educational practices are based on reliable and consistent evidence PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 6. INFORM POLICY: Research findings can influence educational policy by providing data that supports decision- making processes, thereby shaping the governance of educational institutions and practices. PURPOSES OF EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH 7. ENHANCE EQUITY AND INCLUSION: By incorporating diverse perspectives and experiences, educational research helps to ensure that the needs of all students are considered, particularly those from historically marginalized groups. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 1.Clear Research Question or Objective: The research should have a well-defined and specific research question or objective that is clearly articulated. It should address a relevant and important issue within the field. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 2. Relevance: The research should be relevant to the field of study and should contribute to the existing body of knowledge. It should address a gap in the literature or offer new insights. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 3. Methodological Rigor: The research should use appropriate and rigorous research methods. This includes the selection of the right research design, data collection methods, and statistical or analytical techniques. The methodology should be described in detail so that it can be replicated by others. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 4. Data Quality: The data collected for the research should be accurate, reliable, and valid. Data collection methods should minimize bias and measurement errors. If applicable, the sample size should be sufficient for the research question. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 5. Ethical Considerations: Ethical guidelines and principles should be followed throughout the research process. This includes obtaining informed consent from participants, protecting their privacy and confidentiality, and conducting research in an ethical and responsible manner. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 6. Literature Review: A good research study should include a thorough literature review that demonstrates a clear understanding of the existing research on the topic. It should also justify why the research is necessary. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 7. Clear Presentation of Findings: The research findings should be presented clearly and logically. Tables, charts, and figures should be used to help visualize the data, and the results should be interpreted in the context of the research question. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 8. Conclusions and Implications: The research should draw appropriate conclusions based on the findings and discuss their implications. Researchers should avoid overgeneralization and should acknowledge limitations. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 9. References and Citations: All sources of information and data used in the research should be properly cited and referenced. Plagiarism should be avoided, and credit should be given to previous work. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 10. Peer Review: If possible, the research should undergo peer review, where experts in the field evaluate the study's quality, validity, and significance. Peer-reviewed research is typically considered more reliable. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 11. Transparency: The research should be transparent, with all data, methodologies, and materials being made available to other researchers for verification and replication. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 12. Practical Relevance: The research should have practical implications and relevance. It should provide insights or recommendations that can be applied in real-world settings or inform policy and decision-making. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 13. Contributions to Knowledge: A good research study should make a meaningful contribution to the field, whether by confirming existing theories, challenging established ideas, or proposing new concepts. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 14. Communication: The research should be effectively communicated through well-written and organized research papers or reports. Clear and concise writing enhances the understanding and accessibility of the research. CRITERIA OF A GOOD RESEARCH 15. Timeliness: Research should be conducted and published in a timely manner to ensure its relevance and impact.
