Professionalism Boards Objectives: recognize the role of student and physician as a lifelong learner. Recall and recognize the overarching course goals and objectives and how they relate to the improved delivery of healthcare and success as a future clinician. Demonstrate understanding of the many roles a physician plays in the delivery of health care. Course goals: The Health Systems, Community Medicine and Medical Jurisprudence course is designed to introduce the student to aspects of health care beyond basic science and the clinical aspects of patient care. The Jurisprudence section of the course will expose the student to the medico-legal aspects of the practice of health care. The Health Systems and Policy portion introduces fundamental principles and concepts associated with the delivery of health care in today’s ever-changing health environment. The course will also introduce the student to concepts in epidemiology and transmissible diseases. The course will elaborate on concepts in research- based methodology and evidence based medicine from previous courses. Additionally, this course will review ways to enhance patient safety and experience as well as identify the role of various forms of bias that can affect patient care. Reality Medicine is not JUST about science. – The “Practice” of medicine is not always intuitive – It is not enough to just know the answers/diagnosis/treatment The effective practice of medicine and health care delivery involves having a thorough understanding of: – Drivers of patient satisfaction – Outcomes/Quality – Legal implications – Ethical implications – Payment – Cost – Variance Medicine is also a business and the business of medicine is ever changing  As you become a physician what are some of the roles and responsibilities you may have? Life-Long Learner Medical/Surgical Treatments – EBM – “State of the art” Learn from mistakes and decrease errors Cost Effective Care High quality decision making based on outcomes and medical necessity Patient as consumer Patient engagement/experience/compliance Health Care regulations- billing, coding, documentation, etc. Impact of health care system on economy  Being a lifelong learner is an intentional, Develop a plan to be successful proactive decision by the individual.
