PHILO PREPARED BY HAMILI M. ADLON JR. SOPHY 101 A cup of change AN INTRODUCTION In the past, I've asked students what they thought Philosophy was, and often received interesting answers. "Philosophy is..." "a bunch of crap that people do when they want to make money but don't want to work." "Trying to answer questions through observation and thought. Philosophy could be a formula to life, or an informed way of life." "Different peoples views on life, What is death, and the after-life." "Wanting to know more than the obvious; clarifying (using reason and logic) answers to questions-arguing." Philosophy? "How a person thinks." "Sitting around, smoking cigarettes, and getting into deep discussions about life's little quirks." "The rational inquiry into the nature of the universe, both physical and metaphysical." "In-depth reasoning about literary works (analyzing)." "The search for truth through the contemplation to reach a higher sense of self or self- actualization. Each of these definitions is interesting in its own way, and to some degree capture some of what Philosophy is about, or at least what people THINK it's about. What we can What is glean from these definitions is that Philosophy? Philosophy is a kind of conversation about important questions, much of which is focused on human existence. Philosophy has 2 main divisions: 1.Western – Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, St.Thomas and Augustine, What is Descartes, Etc. Philosophy? 2.Eastern – Confucius, Lao Tzu, Hinduism, Buddhism Philosophy searches for TRUTH. What is Philosophy deals with Philosophy? how life must be lived. What is Truth? Truth is not something up there, rather, truth is at the heart of human existence. We must have an open mind in order to understand the TRUTH. For this reason, we need to embrace the love for learning. a t is h W phy? ilo so Ph Gr e ek wo r ds PH om I ) LO. i sd fr om ( W A. m e s P HI do m Co S O i s d W om an of isd ) e e Lo v f w (Lov is rs o y e o ph L ov s he h ilo – t r s.” P he r as p a go l o so t he th hi of Py “P n e h is d a lle ) – o t ed e c ee k e vo s r r a ( G r s d h , a t es p he T r ut c ra o so he S o i l t t Ph ing s h a te a rc e s e Gr in e lf. life n its i h ole u e w v al w as th tru a t is h W phy? ilo so Ph a nd i on e s t d ). qu t ho e e th c m d t i u se ra r th c e s – ( So t wo r at o d s no c th i So e Li f e e r m d be w n e y an s mi o nl a” a n t i n ex c a r an - “ U o m g no ” isd I i n g.
