WHMIS Workplace Hazardous Material Information System WHMIS HAS A NEW NAME, its called GHS! WHMIS is a national hazard communication system that provides information on the safe use of hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. There is a new initiative that hopes to standardize chemical hazard classification and communication globally. This has resulted in a change in the WHMIS symbols that you have previously learned. It is now called the Global Harmonized System (GHS). GAS CYLINDER Gases under pressure – Examples: Oxygen tank FLAMMABLE These materials have the ability to catch on fire easily Examples: – Propane gas OXIDIZERS Materials that can intensify a fire Examples: – Hydrogen peroxide CORROSIVE Materials will chemically damage or destroy metals May cause serious skin burns and eye irritation Example: – Hydrochloric acid EXPLOSIVE Materials that are self- reactive or can explode Examples: – Potassium ACUTE TOXICITY can cause death or toxicity with short exposure to small amounts Example: – Carbon monoxide HEALTH HAZARD may cause or be suspected of causing serious health effects Example: – Asbestos Irritants, Sensitizers and Other Hazards May cause less serious health effects or damage to the ozone Example: – Acids BIOHAZARDOUS INFECTIOUS MATERIALS Infectious agents or a biological toxin causing a serious disease or death Examples: – Used needles
