Official Rules, VOLLEYBALL Ms. Morale Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of 6 players on a playing court measuring 18m by 9m compete against each other. The ball is put into play through a serve by the player in ‘1’ who can contact the ball anywhere behind the baseline. Each team has a maximum of 3 contacts (in addition to a block) to prevent the ball from touching the ground on its own court and then send it over to the opponents’ side. The ball remains in play until it touches the floor, walls, ceiling or any other object or until a player commits a fault. Scoring System > rally point system which means a point is awarded on every possession to the winner of the rally > each game goes up to 25 points, win by two, no cap except for the deciding game of a match > the deciding game goes up to 15 points, win by two, no cap > to win a match, most high school leagues require best 2 out of 3; whereas college/university/professional leagues require best 3 out of 5 > officials signal winner of point first followed by infraction Service > server must contact the ball behind the baseline before entering the court; if your feet touch the baseline then you have just lost the rally and a point > server has 8 seconds to execute his/her serve after the official has blown the whistle > you lose the rally and point if your serve hits an antenna (antennas mark the sidelines) > your serve can hit the top of the net and proceed into the opponents’ court > when your opponents’ lose the rally and possession, your team must rotate from ‘2 to 1’, etc. before serve Substitutions > a maximum of 12 players are allowed on a volleyball line up sheet > a maximum of 12 substitutions are allowed per game > these substitutions may be made all at once or during different legal interruptions; the substitution must be requested while the ball is dead and before the whistle for service sounds > a substitute player may enter the game, but s/he can only be replaced by the same player for whom s/he substituted only once during that game > the players who are coming in as substitutes must be ready and in the substitute zone (front court and sideline) near the scorer’s table > a libero can come in and out of the backcourt without requiring a formal substitution Change of Courts > after each game/set, teams change courts to play the following game/set > if there is a deciding game/set, once a team reaches 8 points, the players change courts and go to their same position on the other side without any delay …2 Contacting the Ball > each team is allowed a maximum of 3 contacts (the block does not count as one of those contacts) > the ball may be hit with any part of the body > the ball must be cleanly hit … no scooping, lifting, pushing, or directing > double hit error = a player touches the ball twice in a row > you can play a ball off the net during serve > you can volley a serve (however, some high school leagues do not allow this for their junior teams) > you cannot touch the net at any time > backcourt players can spike the ball from behind the attack line and not in front of it > a ball that lands on a boundary line is considered good > a ball that touches the floor, ceiling, net, posts, antennas, etc. is out Player at the Net > permitted to penetrate into the opponent’s space under the net, provided that this does not interfere with the opponent’s play; penetration into the opponent's court, beyond the centre line: to touch the opponent's court with a foot (feet) is permitted, provided that some part of the penetrating foot (feet) remains either in contact with or directly above the centre line; to touch the opponent’s court with any part of the body above the feet is permitted provided that it does not interfere with the opponent’s play. > a player may enter the opponent's court after the ball goes out of play. > players may penetrate into the opponent's free zone provided that it does not interfere with the opponent’s play The ‘Libero’ Player > each team has the option to register one specialized defensive player, "Libero" among the final list of 12 players for the whole tournament. The specific rules for a Libero player are as follows: A) He/she is restricted to performing as a back row player and has no right at all to complete an attack hit when the ball is above the height of the top of the net. B) The Libero may not serve, block or attempt to block. C) The Libero must wear a different colour shirt from the other members of the team. D) Substitutions involving a Libero are not counted as regular and their number is unlimited. A Libero cannot take part in normal substitutions and may only enter or leave the game while the ball is out of play and before the whistle for service. E) It is necessary to have a rally between replacement of two different players involving a Libero. With the previous approval of the first referee, an injured Libero may be substituted during the match by any registered player within the normal line-up list of the score sheet. G) The designated replacement of a Libero will be limited to performing as a Libero for the rest of the match and the subsequent matches. Nevertheless, this player will be allowed to be registered again in the normal line-up of later matches once the initially registered Libero is officially re-instituted. H) No other player will be authorized to perform as a Libero and in the case of further injury of the originally registered Libero, he/she will be replaced by the same player under the same conditions as stated in previous points. …3
