Vocal Physical Education 9 Instructor La Salle University Integrated School ## Volleyball - a game for two teams, usually of six players, in which a large ball is hit by hand over a high net, the aim being to score points by making the ball reach the ground on the opponent's side of the court. - the inflated ball used in volleyball ## History of Volleyball 1895 to Today ## Mintonette - William Morgan @ the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts - blend of elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball ## 1896, July 7th - At Springfield College, the first game of "volleyball" was played ## 1907 Volleyball was presented at the Playground of America Convention as one of the most popular sports ## 1916 - Philippines- an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced - The Filipinos developed the "bomba" or kill, and called the hitter a "bomberino". ## 1916 - - The NCAA was invited by the YMCA to aid in editing the rules and in promoting the sport - Added to school & college physical education & intramural programs ## World War I - 1917, the game was changed from 21 to 15 points - 1919 American Expeditionary Forces distributed 16,000 volleyballs to it's troops and allies. This provided a stimulus for the growth of volleyball in foreign lands ## 1920s - 1920, three hits per side and back row attack rules were instituted - 1928, it became clear that tournaments and rules were needed, the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA, now USA Volleyball) was formed ## 1930s the first two-man beach game was played. ## 1940s - 1947, the Federation Internationale De Volley-Ball (FIVB) was founded in Paris - Late 1940s Forearm pass introduced to the game (as a desperation play). Most balls were played with overhand pass. ## 1950s - 1951 - Volleyball was played by over 50 million people each year in over 60 countries - 1957 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) designated volleyball as an Olympic team sport, to be included in the 1964 Olympic Games. ## 1960s - 1960's new techniques added to the game included - the soft spike (dink), - forearm pass (bump), - blocking across the net, and - defensive diving and rolling - 1964, Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo (Japanese gave us the modern version of the ball) ## 1970s - 1974, the World Championships in Mexico were telecast in Japan - 1975, the US National Women's team began a year-round training regime (men started in 1977) ## 1980s - 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was formed - 1984, the US won their first medals at the Olympics in Los Angeles. The Men won the Gold, and the Women the Silver. - 1988, the US Men repeated the Gold in the Olympics in Korea ## 1990s - 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! - 1996, 2-person beach volleyball was added to the Olympics ## Today - China, Brazil and Russia lead the world - Nanjing, China-venue for 2014 Summer Youth Olympics for Beach Volleyball - 2^nd most popular sport in the WORLD!!! ## Volleyball Basic Rules ### To Begin and Play the Game - Each volleyball team consists of 6 players. - A player puts the ball into play (serves) by standing behind the baseline and hitting the ball into the opponent's court. - The server may not touch inside the court until the ball has been served. ### Volleyball Basic Rules - All players, other than the server, must be inside the court at the time the ball is served. - The volleyball must be clearly visible to opponents before being served. - Any successfully hit ball may touch the net and legally enter the opponent's court. ### Volleyball Basic Rules - Each team may play the ball no more than 3 times before sending it across the net to the opponent. - A player may not contact the ball more than one time before the ball is contacted by a teammate or an opponent. - The ball must cross the net prior to being played except when blocking a spike. - Players may not touch the net or their opponents' court; a player may step on, but not over, the center line. ### Volleyball Basic Rules - A point is scored after play is completed on each served ball. - A ball that touches a boundary line is in the court. - **Side-Out:** each time a team loses a point, the ball goes to the opponent to be served. - The new serving team must first rotate clockwise, one team position. - A game ends when a team scores 25 points with a 2 point lead. ### Volleyball Basic Rules #### Basic Violations -(A) Stepping on or over the line on a serve. -(B) Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully. -(C) Hitting the ball illegally (Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc.). -(D) Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play. ### Volleyball Basic Rules -(E) Reaching over the net, except under these conditions: - 1 - When executing a follow-through. - 2 - When blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is being returned (the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third play. -(F) Reaches under the net (if it interferes with the ball or opposing player). -(G) Failure to serve in the correct order. -(H) Blocks or spikes from a position which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in a back row position. ### Volleyball Basic Rules #### The Court - Both indoor and outdoor courts are 18 m x 9mi (29'6" x 59'). - Indoor courts also include an attack area designated by a line 3 m (9'10") back from the center line. - Lines on the court are 5cm (2" wide). ### Volleyball Basic Rules #### Net Height - Net height for men, co-ed mixed 6, & outdoor is 2.43 meters or 7'11-5/8". - Net height for women, 7'4-1/8". - The height of the net shall be 8'. ### Volleyball Basic Rules #### Ball - The ball weighs between 9 and 10 ounces. Ball pressure is between 4.5 and 6.0 pounds ### Volleyball Basic Rules | Volleyball Lingo | Translation | |---|---| | "Ace" | When the ball is served to the other team, and no one touches it. | | "Sideout" | When the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the ball to go to the other team. | | "Stuff" | When a player jumps about the height of the net, blocks the ball, and the ball goes back at the person who attacked (spiked) the ball. | | "Dig" | When a player makes a save from a very difficult spike. | | "Kill" / "bomba" | When a team spikes the ball and it either ends in a point or a sideout. |
