Lirit, RPm Week August 27-30, 2024 Topic Outline Relevance of Values Education in the Philippines Nature of Values Conceptual Meaning of Values Morals After discussion: Attendance with a Twist Relevance of Values Education in the Philippines Overview VALUES EDUCATION FOR THE FILIPINO Based on the mandate of the 1987 Constitution, Cory Aquino directed the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) to develop the framework for the implementation of values education programs in the three levels of education. This program made values education a primary thrust in the educational system and became an integral part of the curriculum. Overview VALUES EDUCATION FOR THE FILIPINO The aim of the administration during those time is “Moral Recovery: The Building of the Filipino People and the Rebuilding of the Nation”. The aim of the Moral Recovery Program that Cory Aquino initiated and implemented is to eradicate the social ills that have plagued us for the past several decades. Overview VALUES EDUCATION FOR THE FILIPINO The need to strengthen Filipino values was supported by the executive order through Presidential Proclamation No. 479 dated October 7, 1994 titled, Declaring the Month of November of Every Year as Filipino Values Month. Values provide the general guidelines for one’s conduct. Values Defined Values can be defined as those things that are important to or valued by someone. Values Defined Individually or organizationally, values determine what is right and what is wrong, and doing what is right or wrong is what we mean by ethics. Conceptual Meaning of Values Conceptual Meaning of Values BRIAN HALL: “Values refer to the major priorities that one chooses to act on, and the creatively enhances his life and the lives of those with whom he associates with.” Values are chosen from alternatives, is acted upon, and enhances creative interpretation and development of human personality. Conceptual Meaning of Values BRIGHTMAN: “Values are ideals and principles by which man lives.” Value means whatever is actually liked, prized, esteemed, desired, approved, and enjoyed by anyone at any time. Hence, value is an exciting realization of one’s desires. Conceptual Meaning of Values SOCIOLOGISTS AND ANTHROPOLOGISTS Values refer to the criteria by which a community judges the importance of individuals, patterns, goals, and other sociological aspects. Conceptual Meaning of Values HOMANS: “Values are the unconscious assumptions the members of any society make.” To which is considered desirable, which is thought worthy of being pursued regardless of whether or not it is actually being pursued. Conceptual Meaning of Values KINGSLEY DAVIS “The source of values lies chiefly on the sentiments, broad backgrounds of feelings which make something seem valuable and others not valuable. Such feelings arise partly from internalized norms. The transition from sentiments to value, to end, is one of increasing specificity.” Morals Morals Morals provide the social standards differentiating the good from the bad, the correct from the wrong, and the desirable from the undesirable. Morals are produced by culture or a by-product of it. Morals and Values Morals and values are a part of the behavioral aspect of a person. Moral is a system of beliefs that is taught for deciding good or bad, whereas Values are personal beliefs or something that comes from within. S M L? RE M O SHA LA N G? How does social media affect the way Filipinos’ morals and values are being changed or distorted? To sum it up... Values are generally long-term standards or principles that are used to judge the worth of an idea or action.
