Introduction: The Trained Nurses' Association of India (TNAI) is a national organization of nurse professionals at different levels. It was established in 1908 and was initially known as Association of Nursing Superintendents.\ The Government of India has recognized TNAI as a service organization in 1950. A similar recognition by all the State Governments has been an asset to the promotion of its objectives. Foundation stone for TNAI Headquarters Inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi laid by Dr. S Radhakrishnan Objectives\ Upholding every way the Dignity and honour of the nursing profession, Promoting a sense of espirit de corps among all nurses, To advance professional, educational, economic and general welfare of nurses **Functions** - To enunciate standards of Nursing Education and implement these through appropriate channels. - To establish standards and qualifications for nursing practice. - To enunciate standards of Nursing Service and implement these through appropriate channels. - To establish a code of ethical conduct for practitioners. - To stimulate and promote research designed to enhance - To stimulate and promote research designed to enhance the knowledge for evidence-based nursing practice. - To promote legislation and to speak for Nurses in regard to legislative action. - To promote and protect the economic welfare of Nurses. - To provide professional counselling and placement service for Nurses. - To provide for the continuing professional development of practitioners. - To represent Nurses and serve as their spoke person with allied national and international organisations,governmental and other bodies and the public. - To serve as the official representative of the Nurses of India\ as a member of the International Council of Nurses. - To promote the general health and welfare of the public through the Association programmes, relationships and activities e.g. Disaster Management. - To render care as per the changing needs of the society. **Membership** A life member is a person who is a registered Nurse and Midwife (equivalent of midwifery training in case of male nurse), trained from an institution recognised by the Indian Nursing Council/State Nursing Council and holds a certificate of training issued by a Nursing Registration Council or Board of Examinations recognised by the Indian Nursing Council. Mile stones of the association The two Associations i.e. The Association of Nursing Superintendents and The Trained Nurses\' Association combined for the purpose of affiliation with the International Council of Nurses (ICN). In 1995, TNAI was forced to disaffiliate itself from the ICN because of the paucity of funds to meet the subscription fee Activities [**Publications**](http://nurseszone.in/nursingbooks.aspx) The TNAI brings out a monthly journal, The Nursing Journal of India which was founded in 1910 as its official organ. This is the main link between the members of the Association, the Headquarters and State Branches on all important matters. The Association also brings out books on nursing practices and nursing education. Rapport with the government of India Government recognition as service association Issuance of the railway concession: Since 1991, Railway is granted concession to the TNAI members and the association was authorized to issue certificates to members for getting 25 % concessions in second classes. Affiliation with government committees and councils: TNAI is involved in all governmental endeavors in the field of nursing and given the opportunity to put across its points of view on all matters of consequence (Bhore committee, Central Council of Health). Affiliation with other organizations: TNAI is affiliated with all governmental and non governmental/ National and International organizations. **Collaboration in research activities:** Some of the major activities: HIV/AIDS project in collaboration with the American Nurses\' Association (1994). UNICEF Reproductive Child Health project on "Strengthening System support to ANMs and Health Supervisors, Females' capabilities for implementing Safe Motherhood Practices in the Reproductive and Child Health Programme." (2001). Feasibility study in collaboration with European Commission on improving health care for safe motherhood services of independent private practice by unemployed and under-employed ANMs in India (2002). TNAI/ Swedish International Development Corporation Agency/ Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, project on improving midwifery and emergency obstetric services in India (2005) TNAI is in collaboration with The Association of Women Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWOHNN, US-based organization) are in the process of preparing the guidelines for new born skin care as per the Indian perspective. **Socio-Economic Welfare (SEW) Programmes** TNAI Being committed to provide socio-economic welfare to nurses in the country, a Socio-Economic Welfare (SEW) Committee was formed in 1963. TNAI conduct surveys to study the socio-economic welfare problems of nurses in India and recommended appropriate reforms and solutions. The TNAI Headquarters and the State Branches have been representing SEW problems of Nurses to the authorities concerned at different fora. Student Nurses' Association of India Established in 1929 Under the Umbrella of TNAI I. INTRODUCTION: The Student Nurses' Association of India (SNAI) is an affiliated association of the student nurses under the umbrella of TNAI. The main purpose behind the establishment of SNAI was to uphold the dignity and to promote a team spirit among students with professional ethics. SNAI was established in 1929 during TNAI Annual Conference in Madras. Miss L. Rina Jeans, Nursing Superintendent, Government General Hospital, Madras, was the first Honorary Organizing Secretary of SNAI. The pioneer unit of SNA was established in General Hospital, Madras. The first SNA annual Conference was held in Delhi during November 1932. The first one-day SNA Conference was held in 1951, and the first Biennial SNA Conference was held at Nagpur in 1961. Miss I. Dorabji was appointed as first SNAI Secretary followed by Miss M.Philip. In 1970 with the reorganization of TNAI the designation of the SNAI Secretary was changed to SNAI Advisor. Mrs. NarenderNagpal was appointed as the first SNA Advisor followed by Ms. D. K. Singh (1978-79). The office was re-designated as Assistant Secretary-cum-SNA Advisor. In 2005, again re-designated as Deputy Secretary General-cum-SNA Advisor. Further the SNAI units are expanded gradually to many nursing institutions in India and started functioning. Now there are 900 SNAI units and 150000 SNAI members in the country. II\. OBJECTIVES a) To help the students to uphold the dignity of the profession. b) To promote team spirit among students for common goal. c) To help the students to develop professional ethics. d) To encourage students to gain positive attitude towards the nursing profession e) To encourage the students to develop leadership quality and effective communication skills for overall development. f) To encourage students to participate and compete in various events at state, regional and national conferences. III\. At the unit level, the unit executive committee manages SNA affairs. It comprises of President (Principal of the institution - TNAI member), SNA Advisor (any elected faculty - TNAI member),Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and the conveners of various committees are student nurses elected by the students during their SNA General Body meeting. At the State level, the State SNA Executive Committee comprises of the State TNAI President as ex-officio member, SNA Advisor, Student Vice President, student Secretary elected by all unit Vice president and Secretary of their state during state SNA conference/ Meeting At the National level, the SNA General Committee Comprises of TNAI National President, Honorary Treasurer, Secretary-General, Dy. Secretary General-cum-SNA Advisor and state SNA Advisors of all states and Student SNA Vice Presidents and Student SNA Secretaries of all states. IV. ACTIVITIES OF SNA Number of activities are assigned to the SNAI members at all levels to achieve the objectives of the association. The professional, educational, social, cultural and recreational activities are arranged to strengthen their curricular and co-curricular components at the Unit, State and National level. Organizing conferences and meetings at all levels is one of the important activities which provide a forum for the members to discuss and find solutions for various problems faced by the students. a) Organization of Conferences and Meetings: At the TNAI Conference student representatives i.e Vice-President and the Secretary of the State Branch from each State are invited to attend the SNA General Committee meeting every year. b) Maintenance of SNA Dairy: The SNA Diary was instituted in 1939. This is the biennial record book drawn up for the use of the unit secretaries. There are assessed by the State SNA Advisors annually and the 2 best diaries from each State are then sent to the National SNA Advisor for Biennial evaluation and awards. These diaries are assessed for professional, educational, extracurricular social, cultural and recreational activities. c) Exhibition of Posters : All categories of Student Nurses are eligible to participate in exhibitions, both as groups and as an individual. They can prepare charts, posters on the topics announced in the TNAI Bulletin and NJI. The Posters are competed at the state level, and after thorough scrutinization, only one best entry at the state level under each category and section is entertained at the national level. d) Public speaking and writing : Public speaking and writing is encouraged to increase self-confidence and to help them develop communication skills. In order to achieve this, the competition on Scientific Paper Presentations related to the theme of the Conference is being organized. The Scientific Papers presented by many students are scrutinized at State level. Only one Scientific Paper on each Sub-theme of the conference was sent to the national level for final evaluation. The best three Scientific Papers, one on each of the sub-themes are selected at the national level. e) Project The students undertake community projects such as school health projects, health surveys, nutrition surveys, medical camps, immunization programs, health mela are also undertaken by the student nurses. In addition, fund raising activities are also recommended and encouraged. f) Advocacy of Nursing Profession: To acquaint the General public with the nursing profession, general public is invited to the celebrations and festive of professional and non professional nature, such as Nurses week, WHO day, lamp lighting, Graduation ceremonies, Sports, Tournaments, TV shows and Radio talks which are organized by nurses. g) Fund Raising: Fund raising is an important and necessary activity of SNA done by getting voluntary donations, sale of donation tickets and organizing variety entertainment activities to raise the fund raising. h) Socio-cultural & recreational activities: The association believes that the professional development remains incomplete without this component. Dynamism and energy of present youth who enter the nursing profession is channelized constructively into fine arts, dramas, and different varieties of dances, music, paintings, and other competitive activities. Sports and game are becoming extremely popular and competitions are held at unit level, state level and at the national level. d) Public speaking and writing : Public speaking and writing is encouraged to increase self-confidence and to help them develop communication skills. Benefits of SNA Membership Award of SNA Scholarship for ANM/GNM and B.Sc(N) Participation in National conference: Concession in the registration fee, shall present scientific papers on the theme and participate in all competitions to exhibit their talents. Publication of articles: The student nurses are given an opportunity to publish articles/research papers in the Nursing Journal of India. Free copies of NJI & TNAI Bulletin: Institution and all Student Nurses Association (SNA) Units shall be entitled to free supply of Nursing Journal of India and TNAI Bulletin without any charges. Concession in availing Guest room facilities: Accommodation for SNA members are provided in the TNAI Headquarters and in TNAI's Greater Noida campus at reasonable rate of Rs.250/- per student/day. Welfare Grant: SNA welfare Grant/ Medical Assistance/ Critical Assistance to needy Student Nurses. DiGrievance redressal: resolving the complaints and grievances of the nursing student saster Relief Fund: Provided for affected students.
