They had to come to think of the occupation and annexation ( to bring in, something new) of new lands as part of the natural order of events. In the 1840s the term "Manifest Destiny" was used to describe the obvious destiny of the United States to encompass all of North America. In the 1840s the United States added Texas, Oregon, and the great Southwest including New Mexico and California. The Mexican War was fought in the process.
