A career cluster contains occupations in the same field of work that require similar skills and is used to help focus education plans towards obtaining the necessary knowledge, competencies, and training for success in a particular career pathway. A career path helps you find out how you might move from one job to another within a career cluster. A credential/certification is an earned distinction used to indicate a professional competence is suitable and qualified to do something or work in a field. The human services career cluster concerns itself with helping individuals, families, and communities handle issues and problems that arise in society. The 4 career pathways in human services are Counseling and mental health, Family and Community services, Early childhood services, and consumer services. Counseling and mental health is the human service career pathway that includes workers who understand psychology and assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, decisions and problems. Family and community services are the human services career pathway that includes occupations related to helping disabled, elderly, impoverished or other underrepresented populations to secure housing, employment, financial assistance or other social services. To work in the human services field one must have a bachelors (4 year) degree. Early childhood services is the human service career pathway that includes occupations the relate to teaching young children. Consumer services are the human services career pathway that includes occupations that help the individual with finances, real estate and insurance. Preschool teachers represent jobs in early childhood services. Nutritionists and dietitians are jobs found in the family and human services pathway. Professional associations provide human service workers opportunities to learn new information through networking. Anna Y. Reed was the key leader who wrote the junior Wage Earners book and spoke out in the area of prison reform. Eli Weaver was the key leader who organized teacher guidance committees in every highschool in New York. These committees were designed to help students discover skills for the most appropriate employment. Ellen Richards was the founder of home economics, was the first woman in history to earn a degree in chemistry and the first person to link the worlds of science and chemistry to nutrition. Doris Calloway was the key leader that ran the “penthouse project” a study of nutrition on women of different socioeconomic status from those living in the penthouse to the poor house and developed the standards of nutrition and worked with NASA to create “space food”. James Lind was the key leader who wrote Treatise of the scurvy about treating the nutritionally related disease of scurvy by introducing the use of citrus fruits. James Cattel was a key leader that was known for developing intelligence measurement tests and believed that inherited as well as environmental influences have an effect on a person's mental capabilities. EG Williamson was thought of as the father of counseling. Carl Pfeffier believed that trace minerals play a part in mental stability. Jane Addams was the 1st american woman awarded a nobel prize, opened the hull house and founded social work. Diversity is a variety of differences among people. New and different ideas and promoting inclusiveness are 2 benefits diversity brings to the workplace and community. Language diversity is appreciated when an interpreter is present in a meeting. Culture incompetence is the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Discrimination was shown when john didn't hire pat based on class rather than individual merit. Ageism is shown when Daniel hired the younger worker than the older one because of their age. Ethnocentrism is shown when Pat didn't hire Carl because she thought Sally's culture was better. Gender norming is shown when Bob did not grade Sarah's essay strictly because she is a girl. Stereotyping is when Brady thought Sally was stupid because she is blond. When sharalanda went to japan she adopted the customs and habits. This is an example of assimilation. When you are understanding or sensitive to the feelings, thoughts and experiences of others you have empathy. As a caucasian female I acknowledge barriers to truly understanding the struggles of a different race and gender. This is known as cultural humility. Our family, young and old, celebrates arbor day by planting a tree. This exemplifies cultural generativity. Considering cultural heritage when creating meal plans for the family exemplifies cultural competence for ethnicity. A population distinguished by physical characteristics is known as its race. Jayne is attending college to study old age, the process of aging, and particular problems of old people. She's studying gerontology. You call an ombudsman if you have concerns about the treatment of residents in nursing homes. ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Medicaid is a health program available to assist young people and medicare is for people over 65. Living wage is enough income to allow needs to be met, bills to be paid and some savings. Minimum wage is the lowest amount of money allowed by the government. Dropping out of school increases the likelihood of poverty in young people. Seeing yourself as a male or female is referring to your sex. Differentiating between masculinity and femininity is known as gender identity. A private business is considered a for profit type of human services organization. Natural disasters can lead to the loss of homes & food & cause stress. Mission statements are often inspiring and powerful but not specific in numbers or tasks. Corporation is the type of business that is governed by a board of directors. The Board of Directors oversees the activities of a company such as setting policies, and adding programs. Executive director is the senior operating manager or an organization. The CFO is primary responsibility is to manage the financial risks of the corporation, do financial planning and record-keeping, as well as financial reporting to higher management. The ability to know, understand & manage your emotions exemplifies Intra personal Skills. Clarifying values process allows individuals to become fully conscious of values to be more self- directed & effective. Identifying beliefs, clarifying values and assessing one's personality are aspects of Self reflections Self Actualization is the level of Maslow's Hierarchy do few people ever reach Self Actualization. To put in order of importance is to Prioritize What five criteria should set goals meet Specific, measureable, achievable, realistic, timley Current reality is the total of all internal & external elements that we interact with at any given time.
