Migration to Madinah Encountering people on the journey People commonly knew Abu Bakr, but many didn’t know the Prophet well Whoever would meet Abu Bakr on this journey to Madinah would ask who this person was with him He would respond saying “ ‫“( ”هذا الرجل َيْه ِد ْيِني السبيَل‬This man is showing me the way”) The obvious meaning of this is that he is showing Abu Bakr the way to a place, but what he meant was he shows Abu Bakr the path of guidance and truth Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫أم معبد‬ The Prophet, with his group, passed by the tent of a woman by the name of ‫ أم معبد‬on the way to Madinah. She was known as a very noble and hospitable woman. They inquired about any meat and dates she may have, with the intention of purchasing it from her. However, they couldn’t find anything. The Prophet looked towards the tent and saw a goat, so he asked ‫ أم معبد‬about it. She replied saying that that goat is thin and weak because of which it cannot go out grazing with other goats. Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫أم معبد‬ The Prophet asked if it has any milk. ‫ أم معبد‬replied asking “how will it have any milk?” The Prophet asked “Do I have permission to milk it?” ‫ أم معبد‬replied “My parents are sacrificed for you. If it has any milk, then you can surely take it.” The Prophet said ‫ بسم هللا‬and placed his blessed hand on its udders It filled with milk, so he started milking it A large pot, which could easily fill 8 to 10 people, was filled with milk Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫أم معبد‬ The Prophet gave it his companions to drink from and then drank some himself in the end He then milked the goat again and filled the pot He gave that pot to ‫أم معبد‬ She then pledge allegiance to the Prophet, and the Prophet headed ahead towards Madinah The husband of ‫أم معبد‬, by the name of ‫أبو معبد‬, came home in the evening after grazing the goats and saw the pot filled with milk Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫أم معبد‬ Asked ‫“ أم معبد‬where did this milk come from? This goat had no milk in it.” She said “Today, a blessed man passed by. By Allah, these are blessings due to him.” and then she told him the entire incident ‫ أبو معبد‬asked her to describe the Prophet so she did He said “By Allah, this is the man from the Quraysh. I will go and serve him.” Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫سراقة بن مالك‬ The Quraysh had made an announcement that the one who finds the Prophet or Abu Bakr will receive a reward of 100 camels Suraqah bin Maalik narrates: I was sitting in my gathering when a person came and said “I have seen some individuals passing through the shoreline. I think it is Muhammad and his companions.” He then says that “I thought in my heart that “indeed, it is them.” but I chased him away saying “it was probably other people.” so that he or anyone else doesn’t take the reward of 100 camels. After a while, I left the gathering and went home. Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫سراقة بن مالك‬ I told my female slave to take my horse to a certain place and then left from the rear entrance of my home with my spear. When Suraqah got close, Abu Bakr saw him and became afraid. He said to the Prophet “Oh Prophet of Allah, we are caught. He has come searching for us.” The Prophet replied saying “Do not fear. Allah is certainly with us.” and made duaa against Suraqah. At that very moment, the horse of Suraqah was swallowed into the ground until its knees. Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫سراقة بن مالك‬ Suraqah said “ I believe this has happened due to the duaa you both made against me. Make duaa to Allah for me. By Allah, I promise that whoever comes out searching for you, I will send him back.” The Prophet made duaa and the horse came out from the ground. Suraqah says “I realized at that moment that Allah will surely grant the Prophet victory and I informed him about the announcement that the Quraysh had made. I also presented to him provisions I had, but he didn’t accept it. However, he said to not inform anyone about their situation. Then, I returned. Whoever I encountered on my journey back to Makkah, I would tell them to return as I have already checked.” Migration to Madinah Interaction with ‫سراقة بن مالك‬ Suraqah once had addressed Abu Jahal saying “Oh Abu Jahal, by Allah, if you were present when the feet of my horse were stuck in the ground, you would believe and you would have no doubt that Muhammad is a Prophet who has been sent with proofs. Who can combat him?” Suraqah bin Maalik accepted Islam. Migration to Madinah Incident of ‫بريدة أسلمي‬ He set out with 70 leaders in search of the Prophet so that he may attain the reward of 100 camels. He came close to the Prophet who asked him ‫( من أنت‬who are you?). Buraydah replied saying ‫أنا‬ ‫بريدة‬ The Prophet turned to Abu Bakr and said “ ‫( ”برد أمرنا و َص ُلَح‬our matter has cooled down and has been resolved). Migration to Madinah Incident of ‫بريدة أسلمي‬ The Prophet then asked him “which tribe are you from?” to which he replied “ ‫”من أْس َلْم‬ The Prophet turned towards Abu Bakr and said “‫( ”َس ِلْم َنا‬We have gained safety) The Prophet then asked him “which branch of Aslam are you from?” to which he replied “‫من بني‬ ‫”سهم‬ The Prophet turned towards Abu Bakr and said “‫( ”خرج سهُم ك‬your share has been taken out). In other words, he is saying that Abu Bakr will receive his share from Islam. Migration to Madinah Incident of ‫بريدة أسلمي‬ Buraydah then asked the Prophet “Who are you?” to which the Prophet responded saying “‫( ”أنا محمد بن عبد هللا رسول هللا‬I am Muhammad bn Abdullah, the Messenger of Allah) Buraydah said the testimony and accepted Islam. The 70 riders who were with him also accepted Islam. Migration to Madinah Incident of ‫بريدة أسلمي‬ Buraydah said “Oh Messenger of Allah, when you enter Madinah, you should have a flag with you.” So the prophet took off his turban and tied it to a spear. He then gave the flag to Buraydah. As they were entering Madinah, Buraydah was walking in front of the Prophet holding the flag. Migration to Madinah The people of Madinah waiting to welcome the Prophet The people of Madinah had heard the news about the Prophet leaving Makkah. All of them desired to see the Prophet so every day, they would stand in ‫ مقام َحَّرة‬waiting for the Prophet. By the afternoon time, they would return home. They would do this everyday. One day, they were returning after waiting when a Jew saw the Prophet coming and announced it. The Ansaar ran to welcome the Prophet and the takbeer could be heard around the entire city. Staying in ‫ قباء‬before going to Madinah There was a settlement 3 miles away from Madinah called ‫قباء‬ Some of the families of the Ansaar were settled there. There was one family from amongst them which was unique and this was ‫بنو عمرو بن عوف‬. Their leader was Kulthum bin Hadam. The Prophet reached ‫ قباء‬and stayed at his home. Abu Bakr stayed at the home of Khabib bin Asaaf. Ali remained in Makkah for three days after the Prophet left and he returned all of the trusts to the rightful owners. He then went to ‫ قباء‬and stayed at the home of Kulthum with the Prophet. Staying in ‫ قباء‬before going to Madinah Laying the foundation for ‫َم ْس ِج ُد الَّت ْق َو ى‬ The first thing that the Prophet ‫ صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬did after arriving in Quba’ was laying the foundation of a Masjid The Prophet was the first to place a stone towards the Qiblah with his blessed hands After him, Abu Bakr ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬placed a stone Following him, Umar ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬placed a stone After that, the other Sahabah also assisted in lifting stones and placing them to build the Masjid The Sahabah would urge the Prophet to not lift the stones, but the Prophet wouldn’t accept this and continued to assist Staying in ‫ قباء‬before going to Madinah Ayah revealed regarding this blessed Masjid Allah revealed an ayah in Surah al-Taubah regarding the Masjid in ‫قباء‬ )١٠٨( ‫َّلَم ْس ِج ٌد ُأِّس َس َع ىَل ٱلَّت ْق َو ٰى ِم ْن َأَّو ِل َيْو ٍم َأَحُّق َأن َتُق وَم ِفيِه ۚ ِفيِه ِرَجاٌۭل ُيِح ُّبوَن َأن َيَت َط َّه ُرو۟اۚ َو ٱلَّلُه ُيِح ُّب ٱْلُم َّط ِّه ِريَن‬ “Certainly, a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. In it are men who love to be purified. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.” Staying in ‫ قباء‬before going to Madinah What was the action of the people of ‫ قباء‬that Allah praised them for? When this ayah was revealed, the Prophet ‫ صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬asked Amr bin Awf “what is the method of purity you people have which Allah has praised?” The ‫ بنو عمرو بن َع وف‬responded saying “Oh Messenger of Allah, after we use rocks to cleanse ourselves (after relieving ourselves), we follow up with water. It is possible that Allah has liked this action of ours.” The Prophet ‫ صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬said “Yes, this is that action because of which Allah has praised you. Continue doing this action and remain upon it.” Staying in ‫ قباء‬before going to Madinah The Prophet performing optional salaah in ‫قباء‬ According to narration of ‫عبد هللا بن عمر‬, the Prophet would go to ‫ مسجد قباء‬every Saturday riding or walking. He would then perform 2 raka’ats of optional salaah there. Narration of ‫ َس ْه ل بن ُحَن ْي ف‬: The Prophet ‫ صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬said “whoever leaves from his home with wudhu’ towards ‫ مسجد قباء‬and performs 2 raka’ats of optional salaah will get the reward of performing one umrah.” The date of Hijrah (migration) to Madinah The date of Hijrah (migration) to Madinah According to scholars, the Prophet left Makkah on a Thursday which was the 27th of Safar in the 13th year of Prophethood. He then spent 3 nights in the cave of ‫ثور‬. He left for Madinah on a Monday which was the 1st of Rabiul Awwal. He reached Quba’, using the alternate pathway, on a Monday which was the 8th of Rabiul Awwal, during the afternoon The first Jumu’ah and sermon of the Prophet The Prophet stayed in Quba’ for a few days. On Friday, he intended to go to Madinah. He rode his she camel and continued his journey to Madinah. On the way to Madinah, he passed the town of ‫بنو ساِلم‬. He stopped there and it was the time of Jumu’ah salaah. Gave a Khutbah (sermon) and performed Jumu’ah there. This was the first Khutbah and Jumu’ah of the Prophet in Islam The sermon of the Prophet ‫صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬ The Prophet gave this khutbah after migration, after 13 years of oppression from the Meccans. Despite this, he did not utter a single word against his enemies, nor did he criticize them, nor did he complain regarding them. Rather, he spoke about fearing Allah and preparing for the hereafter The desire to host the Prophet in Madinah After Jumu’ah, the Prophet got onto his she-camel and Abu Bakr was seated behind him A large group of the Ansaar was walking on the left, right and behind the Prophet carrying weapons every person had this wish that the Prophet stays at his home in Madinah They would tell the Prophet “this poor household is ready for you” and the Prophet would respond with a duaa He would then tell them “this she-camel is under the control of Allah. I will stay wherever it sits down by the command of Allah.” The Prophet loosened the rope of the she-camel as an indication that he does not have any control over it Arriving in Madinah Everyone gathered on their roofs in Madinah to see the Prophet. They were saying the following poetry at the arrival of the Prophet ‫ِم ْن َثِنَّياِت الَو َداع‬ ‫َط َلَع اْلَبْد ُر َع َلْي نا‬ The moon of the 14th night has risen upon us, from the mountain pass of farewell ‫َم ا َد َع ا ُهللا َداع‬ ‫َوَجَب الُّش ْك ُر َع َلْي َنا‬ Being grateful is necessary for us, as long as there remains one who call onto Allah ‫ِج ْئ َت ِباألْم ِر الُم َط اع‬ ‫َأُّيَه ا اْلَم ْب ُع ْو ُث ِف ْي نا‬ Oh the one who has been sent as a messenger amongst us, you have come with matters necessary for us to obey Arriving in Madinah Every person had on his tongue ‫َجاَء َنِبُّي هللا جاَء َرُس ْو ُل هللا‬ There is a narration of ‫ براء بن عازب رضي هللا عنه‬in Sahih-ul-Bukhari: “I have never seen the people of Madinah as happy as they were when they saw the Prophet ‫ صىل هللا عليه و سلم‬come to Madinah” Anas ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬narrates: when the Prophet came to Madinah, every corner of Madinah was illuminating. When he passed away, everything went dark The she-camel stopping outside of the home of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ The she camel continued to walk and the Sahabah were walking with it whenever a person would hold onto its rope, the Prophet would say “Leave it. It is under the command of Allah.” Eventually, it went to the region of ‫ بنو النجار‬on its own and sat at the place where the door of Masjid Nabawi is now located The Prophet didn’t get off yet After a while, the she-camel got up and sat at the door of the home of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ It then got up again after a while and sat by the first place again The Prophet got off and ‫ أبو أيوب األنصاري‬took the belongings of the Prophet to his home The she-camel stopping outside of the home of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ Allah commanded the she-camel to sit by the door of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ As a result, there was no reason for dispute amongst people about where the Prophet should stay It was by the command of Allah and wasn’t by the choice of the Prophet and everyone understood this No one was able to contradict it or reject it as the she-camel was under the control of Allah History - the first settlement in Madinah When ‫ ُتَّبع‬the king of Yemen passed by the land of Madinah, 400 scholars of the Taurah were with him They made a request to him that he gives them permission to settle there The king asked for the reason for this request to which they responded “we have found in the books of Prophets that in the end of times, there will be a prophet. His name will be Muhammad adn this land will be his land of migration.” The king allowed for everyone to settle there and he had homes made for all of them He got them all married and gave each individual an abundance of wealth History - the first settlement in Madinah Preparing a home for the last Prophet and writing him a letter ‫ ُتَّبع‬prepared a special home for the Prophet hoping that when he migrates, he will stay there. He wrote a letter to the Prophet in which he expressed his desire for Islam and for meeting him History - the first settlement in Madinah His letter to the Prophet ‫َش ِه ْد ُت عىل أحمَد أَّنُه َرُس ول ِم َن ِهللا باِري الَنَس م‬ I bare witness that Ahmad is a messenger from Allah, the creator of all things ‫َفَلْو َم َّد ُع ْم ِرْي إىل ُع ْم ِرِه َلُكْنُت َو ِزْيًرا له واْبَن َع م‬ If I live until his time, then I will surely be of help and assistance to him ‫و جاَهْد ُت ِبالَس يِف أْع َداَءُه و َف َّرْج ُت عن َص ْد ِرِه ُكَّل َغ ّم‬ and I will fight his enemies with a sword and I will remove from his heart every grief History - the first settlement in Madinah His letter to the Prophet He put a seal on this letter and handed it to a scholar saying “if you witness his time, then present this letter to him. Otherwise, hand it to your children and advise them to do the same thing I have told you to do.” ‫ أبو أيوب األنصاري‬was from the children of this scholar. His home was te same one that the king had built for the prophet to stay in after migration. By the command of Allah, the she-camel stopped at the very home the king had built, with the hope that the Prophet would stay there. It is said that ‫ أبو أيوب األنصاري‬handed this letter to the Prophet after his arrival to Madinah. Staying in the home of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ He requested to the Prophet that he stay in the upper level. The Prophet refused this request with the intention that if people come to visit him and the family of ‫ أبو أيوب األنصاري‬is living on the lower level, it may cause them difficulty. Narration of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬: “One day, a pot of water broke. My wife and I were quickly saoking it up with the one cloth that we had so that it didn’t seep through to the lower level (where the Prophet was staying).” Another narration of his: “We would send food for the Prophet everyday. Whatever was left over, the Prophet would return it. We would see where his finger marks were so that we could eat from the same place that the Prophet ate, ‫( َتَبُّرًك ا‬to attain blessings) Staying in the home of ‫أبو أيوب األنصاري‬ Another narration: “One day, we added onions and garlic to a meal and sent it to the Prophet. The Prophet returned it and there was no sign of him eating from it. I became worried so I went to the Prophet and asked him. The Prophet said “I smelled onions and garlic in it. You can eat it. I am someone who speaks to angels and thus, I refuse to eat it.” After that, we never added onions or garlic to the food of the Prophet.” The Jewish scholars in Madinah coming to the Prophet When the Prophet came to Madinah, Jewish scholars came to meet him. They asked the Prophet many questions to test him (as they had knowledge of everything about the last prophet from the books of previous Prophets). For whomever there was guidance, accepted Islam and for whomever there was misguidance, refused to accept Islam A Jewish scholar ‫ عبد هللا بن سالم‬accepting Islam He was a great scholar of the Taurah and was from the children of Yusuf ‫عليه السالم‬ His original name was ‫ ُم ْحِص ن‬and the Prophet changed it to ‫ عبد هللا‬after he accepted Islam He says “when the Prophet came to Madinah, I went to see him and recognized immediately that this is not the face of a liar.” Another narration of his: “I knew the name, qualities and description of the last Prophet, but would never share it with anyone. When the Prophet came to Madinah, I went to him and accepted Islam. When I returned home, I invited all of my family to Islam and they all accepted it. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ The place where the she-camel first sat was the ‫ ِم ْر َبد‬of two orphans (place where dates are dried) The Prophet asked who it belongs to was informed that it is of two orphans named ‫ َس ْه ل‬and ‫سهيل‬ Prophet called them with their paternal uncle (who was caring for them) so that he could discuss purchasing the land from them Both orphans said that we wish to give the land to you without anything for it The Prophet didn’t accept this offer and purchased it for an amount Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ Some narrations: The Prophet told Abu Bakr to give the value of the land to the orphans Some narrations also mention: Abu Bakr gave 10 Dinaar in exchange for it That piece of land had date palms and the Prophet commanded for those trees to be cut There were graves of polytheists on that land and the Prophet commanded for them to be levelled. The Prophet then commanded for bricks to be laid. The Prophet himself participated in this task and the ‫ مهاجرين‬and ‫ أنصار‬accompanied him. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ The Prophet would bring bricks and would sometimes say (acccording to one narration): ‫فاْرَحِم األْنَص اَر و المهاجرْه‬ ‫اللهم إَّن اَألجَر أْجُر اآلخرْه‬ “Oh Allah, verily, the true reward is the reward of the hereafter. Thus, have mercy upon the Ansaar and the Muhajiroon The Sahabah would say: ‫َلَذ اَك ِم ّنا الَع َم ُل الُم َض َّلل‬ ‫َلِئْن َق َع ْدنا و النبُّي َيْع َم ُل‬ If we sit and the Prophet continues (to do this task), then verily that would be a terrible action of ours Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ Amongst those who built the Masjid was Uthman bin Madh’oon who naturally liked to cleanliness. He would carry bricks away from his clothing. If he got even a little bit of dust on his clothes, he would wipe it off. The Masjid was simple in its construction. It had a few walls made of bricks. Had pillars made of date palm stems. Its roof was made of date palm branches and leaves. When it would rain, water would seep through. After that, it was layered with a mixture of dirt and water. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ The Qiblah was put towards Baytul Maqdis. 3 doors were made for the Masjid: 1. where the wall of the Qiblah is now located 2. towards the west (known as ‫)باب الرحمة‬ 3. the one the Prophet used to come and go from (called ‫)باب جبرئيل‬ When the Qiblah was abrogated after 16 to 17 months, the door in the back of the Masjid was closed and another was made. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ The Masjid was built by the Prophet twice The Prophet built the Masjid twice. The first time it was built by him was when he migrated to Madinah. The second time was after the conquest of Khaybar in the 7th year of Hijrah, when an expansion was intended. The land of an Ansaari was attached to the Masjid. The Prophet requested “sell it to us for a castle in Jannah.” The Ansaari wasn’t able to give it for free due to poverty. Uthman ‫ رضي هللا عنه‬purchased it from him for 10,000 dirhams and then gave it to the Prophet in exchange for a castle in Jannah. The Prophet then made it a part of the Masjid. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ Building rooms for the wives After building the Masjid, the Prophet laid the foundation for rooms for his wives. Initially, he built two rooms; one for his wife Sawdah and second for his wife A’isha. Eventually, the Prophet built more as needed. The homes of ‫ حاِرَثة بن ُنعمان‬were attached to the Masjid. Whenever the Prophet was in need, he would give them to him. Most were made of date palm branches and some were made of bricks. Doors were cloths used to cover. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ What happened to the rooms after the death of the wives? By the command of ‫وليد بن عبد الملك‬, they were all included in the Masjid. When this command reached Madinah, all of Madinah was upset. ‫ سهل بن ُحَنْي ف‬would say “if only those rooms were left as they were so that people could see how the Prophet, who had access to all of the treasures of his Lord, lived his life.” Migration of the family of the Prophet The Prophet then sent Abu Raafi’ and Zayd bin Haarithah to Makkah to bring family members who were left behind. Abdullah bin Areeqit was sent with them to show them the way to Makkah. Construction of ‫المسجد النبوي‬ From the family of the Prophet, Fatimah, Umm Kulthum, his wife Sawdah came to Madinah. The Prophet’s daughter Zainab was held by her husband ‫أبو العاص بن ربيع‬ From the family of Zayd, his wife Umm Ayman and son Usamah bin Zayd came to Madinah. From the family of Abu Bakr, his wife Umm Rooman, son Abdurrahman bin Abi Bakr and daughters A’isha and Asma’ came to Madinah. Asma’ was pregnant at the time and her son, Abdullah bin Zubayr was the first child of the Muslims born in Madinah. When Zayd bin Haarithah brought everyone, the Prophet then moved out of the home of Abu Ayyub to the two rooms made for his wives.
