RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Respiration is the overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere and , the blood and the cells. Four Phases in Respiration 1. Breathing or Ventillation 2. External respiration 3. Internal Respiration 4. Cellular Respiration The Human Respiratory System Upper Respiratory Tract 1. Nostrils – are the two openings that filtered the air that you breath in. 2. Nasal Cavity - is the inside of your nose that is lined with a mucus membrane that helps keep your nose moist by making mucus 3. Pharynx - is a common passageway for both food and air 4. Larynx – located at the top of the trachea also called voice box - air passes through the larynx on its way to the lungs - prevents the passage of food and other foreign particles into the lower respiratory tracts. The Human Respiratory System Lower Respiratory Tract 1. Trachea - passage connecting your throat and lungs 2. Bronchi – branches of trachea 3. Bronchioles – small branches of bronchials that lead to the alveoli 4. Alveoli – tiny air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide take place The Human Respiratory System. Lungs – are the main organs of the respiratory system - are symmetrical in pair but not identical - are divded into sections called lobes - surrounded by two layers of membrane called PLEURA - between the two layers is the PLEURAL CAVITY Diaphragm – a powerful muscle nestled in the bottom of the rib cage, aids in respiration | HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM | HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM External Respiration: External Respiration: Transport of gases Transport of gases through through the the System Circulatory Circulatory The exchange of gases System happen between the alveoli The and the of exchange capillaries. gases happen between the | HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Internal Respiration: Exchange of Gases with Body Cells | HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Cellular Respiration: The Body’s Energy- Producing Process INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY TRACT Common Cold Influenza Pneumonia Tuberculosis RESPIRATORY DISORDERS Asthma Bronchitis Emphysema Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Answer the following questions. 1. What is the primary function of the respiratory system? (2 points) 2. Which organs make up the respiratory system? Identify the eight parts of respiratory system and describe the function of each. (1 point for the part; 2points for the function) 3. How does air travel through the respiratory system? (3 points) 4. What role do the alveoli play in the respiratory system? (3 points) 5. How does the respiratory system impact physical exercise and athletic performance? (3 points)
