Study Notes

Respiration

  • Overall exchange of gases between the environment, blood, and cells
  • Four phases:
    • Breathing or Ventilation
    • External Respiration
    • Internal Respiration
    • Cellular Respiration

The Human Respiratory System - Upper Respiratory Tract

  • Nostrils: Two openings that filter inhaled air
  • Nasal Cavity: Lined with mucus membrane to keep the nose moist
  • Pharynx: Common passage for food and air
  • Larynx:
    • Located at the top of the trachea (voice box)
    • Air passes through the larynx on its way to the lungs
    • Prevents food and foreign particles from entering the lower respiratory tract

The Human Respiratory System - Lower Respiratory Tract

  • Trachea: Passage connecting the throat and lungs
  • Bronchi: Branches of the trachea
  • Bronchioles: Small branches of bronchi leading to the alveoli
  • Alveoli: Tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place

The Human Respiratory System - Lungs

  • Main organs of the respiratory system
  • Symmetrical but not identical
  • Divided into sections called lobes
  • Surrounded by two layers of membrane: Pleura
  • Pleural cavity located between the two layers of pleura

The Human Respiratory System - Diaphragm

  • Powerful muscle nestled at the bottom of the rib cage
  • Aids in respiration

The Human Respiratory System - External Respiration

  • Transport of gases through the circulatory system
  • Exchange of gases occurs between the alveoli and capillaries

The Human Respiratory System - Internal Respiration

  • Exchange of gases with body cells

The Human Respiratory System - Cellular Respiration

  • The body's energy-producing process

Infectious Diseases of the Respiratory Tract

  • Common Cold
  • Influenza
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis

Respiratory Disorders

  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
